A beautiful small lochan close to Dinnet

Kinord Cross is a beautifully carved cross slab which dates to the end of the Pictish era, most likely sometime in the 9th century. One side of the kite-shaped stone slab is carved with a relief of an ornate cross, filled with interlace designs. The cross was once thought to be associated with the chapel of nearby Kinord Castle. In the late 19th century the cross was removed to Aboyne Park, but in 1959 it was returned to the shores of Loch Kinord, as near as could be determined to its original location.

This ancient settlement, complete with hut circles and a carefully laid out field system, is set on a neck of land between Loch Davan and Loch Kinord and is part of the Muir of Dinnet National Nature Reserve.

The Battle of Culblean was fought on the 30th of November 1335, during the Second War of Scottish Independence. The Scots, led by Guardian Sir Andrew Murray, achieved victory over an Anglo-Scottish force commanded by David III Strathbogie, titular Earl of Atholl a strong supporter of Edward Balliol.

great spot for bird watching and bird song. look out for siskins!

you can stay in Dinnet and start a hike from there through Muir of Dinnet, Loch Kinord, Burn o'vat, Campus o may and on to Ballater along Deeside. Highly recommended for bird watching, dragonflies, and a varied landscape - pine forests, lochs, heaths, pear bog and marsh, river side, and glacial geological features :)

Conveniently next to the cycle/hiking path. Has toilets but not, seemingly, much cheese.

An interesting island, created over 2500 years ago!

It's largely part of a nature reserve, and a good place for wildlife spotting. Various geese, ducks, red kites and other birds in particular. But also lots of butterflies. Note that water sports are not allowed March to September to protect the birds.

It's a short walk from the car park. There is a scramble through the burn and under a chokestone. Therefore best avoided after heavy rain. There are other walks here too, for example around Loch Kinord or up the hill to make a bigger outing.

Lovey place for a break. Locally produced cheese - including vegetarian. The Café serves cheese toasties and Mac n Cheese. Great coffee too. Lots of outdoor seating and some indoor too. Nice toilets.

This small visitor centre has information about Burn O'Vat, a pothole located close to Loch Kinord near the village of Dinnet. You'll also find toilets as well as a tap with drinking water at the back of the visitor centre.
