9월 14, 2025, Welcome to the Highlands – Pass of Drumochter
The pass itself isn't particularly strenuous, but it's very open and can get very windy. The cycle path is also a patchwork of different roads.

Impressive ruins just outside Kingussie. They're free to visit and will impress even if you're unfamiliar with the story of the Jacobite Rising.

8월 4, 2025, River Tromie Valley Road
This lower section of Glen Tromie is cycled on a hard-packed gravel road that's easy to ride with most bikes. A gravel bike is the ideal choice here, but keep in mind that the paths higher up in the glen deteriorate quickly, and a mountain bike might be a better choice. Whichever bike you use, the scenery is beautiful here, and the views over the various lochs further down the glen are worth the effort alone.

Ruthven Barracks is an early 18th-century infantry barracks built after the Jacobite Rising of 1715 to keep the Highlands under government control. The barracks complex is located at Ruthven, 1.6 kilometres from Kingussie, in the Highland region of Scotland. The barracks were destroyed during the Jacobite Rising of 1745–46. The barracks consisted of a symmetrical arrangement of two wings for living accommodation on the north-east and south-west sides of an open courtyard. The barracks had four floors. Each room had its own hearth, where the soldiers could prepare their own food. The complex was roughly square-walled with attached towers on the west and east corners. The ground floor of the former served as a guardhouse, the latter as a bakery and kitchen. The upper floors of the tower were used for the officers' accommodation. A well was located in the west corner of the complex. The main gate was located on the south-eastern side of the complex. On the north-western side, outside the walls of the barracks complex, there was a stable block.

5월 1, 2024, Pass of Drumochter Summit
The Pass of Drumochter has a fairly big layby that's safely separate from the main road - a good place to drop off/pick up if required; the NCN 7 runs adjacent to the layby. Even better, the NCN 7 with its super smooth asphalt surface is downhill both ways from this high point.

The station, known from the film Trainspotting, is one of the smallest and most remote stations in Europe and is served by the railway line from Fort William, among others. In the station building there is a restaurant which offers hot and cold drinks, delicious cakes and hot snacks.

Beautiful mainly tarmac section of cycling running parallel to the River Tromie. Enjoy an open landscape with forest views, purple heather and a mountainous backdrop.

Drumochter Summit is a mountain pass on NCN 7, the highest point on the National Cycle Network in Scotland standing at an elevation of approximately 1,509 feet (460 m) above sea level. The summit can experience harsh winter conditions, with snow and icy roads being common, posing challenges for cyclists when passing through. Despite these challenges, the pass offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Grampian and Monadhliath Mountains, an iconic Highland landscape.

10월 16, 2023, Loch Garry
There's actually a double track on both sides of the loch; albeit the northwest side track is far better. The only problem is, is that there's no easy or reliable way to get from one side of the loch to the other at the southern end. If the loch is low, the outflow is a narrow, very shallow, stream that can be easily traversed, however, if the loch is not low ...

Good mix of surfaces and amazing views over the pass. BUT, if descending the north side towards Dalwhinne be away of inopportune bollards in the middle of the trail, sometimes on otherwise fast parts of the descent

Very impressive ruins situated on a hill that is visible from far. It is open all day and entry is free. There might be some highland cows around that make for a pretty cheesy picture.
