The former Scuola Grande di San Marco is located in Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo, and its façade significantly influences the Campo and its immediate surroundings. This magnificent scuola is a building from the Venetian Early Renaissance. The Confraternity of Saint Mark is an institution founded around 1260 with the mission of counterbalancing the expansive foreign policy of the Venetian government through social work under the name of the patron saint of the Republic (Saint Mark). After the fire of 1485, the Confraternity's headquarters, the "Scuola Grande di San Marco," was rebuilt. Today, the building serves as the main entrance to the Ospedale Civile SS. Giovanni e Paolo di Venezia (Civil Hospital of Saints John and Paolo of Venice).
