The historic center of the town (which today is called "Gairo Vecchio") was half destroyed by a flood in 1951, and was subsequently completely abandoned, to rebuild new houses a little higher up than the half-destroyed village and on the coast, the latter then forming over the years the town of Cardedu.

Old Gairo was abandoned after the 1951 flood; its residents rebuilt the village a little further up. It's certainly evocative, being right on the road from Gairo to Jerzu, and seeing it abandoned brings a touch of melancholy to those passing by.

If done uphill it's a punch in the stomach, with gradients often close to or above double figures that last for the first 8 km of the segment. Wonderful landscapes, often against the wind. Once you reach the top, there are small climbs left which, compared to the one just completed, seem almost ridiculous. After a considerable descent, the last 4 km leading up to the military range are permeated by the smell of wild rosemary, which makes the uphill efforts more pleasant and bearable
