Great Chalfield is a beautiful medieval manor house surrounded by lush gardens and scenic countryside. Built around 1480 for Thomas Tropenell, a distinguished lawyer and landowner, the moated house is a Grade I listed property. Now owned by the National Trust, it has appeared in various films and TV shows, such as The Other Boleyn Girl, Tess of the d'Ubervilles, and Wolf Hall. Fans of Poldark will recognize it as Killewarran House.

Very beautiful village with film sets from various famous films (including Harry Potter). Be sure to visit Lacock Abbey. This contains the corridors from the Harry Potter films. If National Trust Member: free!

Located in the 13th century National Trust village of Lacock we’re within easy walking distance of the historical Lacock Abbey, the Saxon church of St Cyriac, the 15th century tithe barn and plenty of village stores and craft fairs. Famed for appearing in many screen productions including Harry Potter and Downton Abbey, Lacock village is centrally based between Chippenham, Melksham, Bath and Swindon making us the perfect place for friends and family to meet.

Lacock Abbey was founded in the early 13th century. It remained a nunnery until the 16th century, when it was sold and became a private home. Today it's most famous as the home of William Fox Talbot. In 1835, he made and developed what was possibly the first negative within the house. The National Trust own and manage the property. It's paid entry for non-members. You do get a good view of the house from here and the meadow between here and the house.

The National Trust café at Lacock is in the village rather than the paid entry Lacock Abbey. It serves a good range of drinks, snacks and light meals with profit going to support the work of the Trust. Indoor and outdoor seating and a public toilet next door.

A popular cyclists cafe with a campsite that is also great for runners. They have a good breakfast and lunch menu with plenty of choice and good size portions. Open Tue to Sat 9:00 - 16:00. Sun 9:00 - 15:00. Closed on Mondays.

the less terrifying way to enter BOA

The pretty Cotswold village of Lacock seems frozen in time, preserved to look as it would have done 200 years ago - minus the cars. Its olde worlde charm has brought filmcrews to its streets, with Lacock's most famous appearances including 'Downton Abbey', BBC series 'Pride and Prejudice', and 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince'.

Lock In: very nice restaurant, highly recommended Fish, Chips and Salat side dish. You can join the canal between the Lock In. The path along the canal is narrow, especially when you have to pass under the bridges. Passing with two people is virtually impossible, using the bicycle bell and meeting up is the only option. There are many small boats moored along the canal. The bunches are tied along the banks of the canal to iron bars that are sometimes close to the cycle & walking path. The walkway of some boats opens onto the cycle path. Since it usually concerns houseboats, there is movement of people. My final conclusion: you should drive down this canal at a very low speed, enjoy the surroundings and be alert for everyone who is enjoying it in their own way at the same time (boat people, walkers, runners, cyclists, owners with stray dogs). Influence of weather conditions: I followed the canal after a real cloudburst. The paving of the canal path varies, but is usually packed gravel. A lot of puddles that you cannot always avoid and in places where there is compacted earth you have to pay close attention because this has been transformed into a layer of mud. If you ride a mountain bike: be sure to wear overshoes and rain pants. You will automatically adjust the speed, especially if you try to slalom between the puddles or ride your bike through the puddles with both feet up.

Perfect coffee stop with garden seating and plenty of space for bikes. Not much savoury food on offer but sweet things and great coffee.

Lacock Abbey was founded in the early 13th century by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, as a nunnery of the Augustinian order. It remained a nunnery until the suppression of Roman Catholic institutions in England in the 16th century. Today, it is looked after by the National Trust (paid entry/National Trust membership) and also houses the Fox Talbot museum of photography. Some of the scenes in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets were filmed at Lacock. Cafe with outdoor seating is free to public.

The town bridge was originally constructed in the 14th century, then widened in the 18th century. If you view the bridge from the downstream side the arches are rounded but view from the upstream side and you'll notice that the arches are pointed. The small building on the bridge is thought to have originally been a chapel but was converted into the town lock up in the 17th century.

Lock Inn is a fab location but I wouldn't go there for the food (despite the great photo above)! A good alternative for a light snack, when open, is the Canal Trust café, across the road, by the lock. But if you want the calories the Lock Inn won't disappoint.

National Trust managed Lacock Village is accessible to all. Visit several Harry Potter film locations in the village including Harry's parent's house. The NT Stables café is in the car park opposite the main entrance to Lacock Abbey. There are public toilets next door and plenty of outside seating. It is open from 10:00 - 17:00. Lacock Abbey is paid entry to non-NT members.
