Beautiful ashmore the highest village in Dorset

Amazing place. I was able to check out the shop and cafe, and have a peak at the garden, whetting my appetite to make it a day's destination some time.

Not as stunning from below as from above!

Tip: We have been here three times over the last few years and each time we managed to get a table in the café at the top of the street. One of the most beautiful views in England is made even more beautiful with cream tea or another treat! Here you sit quietly and just wait until no one is in sight: and then quickly take your dream photo! In addition, the service is friendly and the prices are not too high. The view of Gold Hill is nowhere better than from here.

This is a horrendous bit of road. If you are going top to bottom, the road at the end is at a lethal angle to the main road. Google ‘constant bearing decreasing range’ and that will tell you everything. I’d avoid it like the plague if it were me.

These are the ruins of a former 13th century manor house. It's now a grade 2 listed remains.

Lovely road that follows the River Ebble. From the A30 in the west, through Berwick St. John and Ebbesbourne Wake to Broad Chalke in the east.

Lovely lane between Maiden Bradley and Kingston Deverill. Fairly high at 158m with good views.

Great views southwest across the Somerset Levels from this little hill on the edge of Cucklington. The viewpoint is at about 135m high and there is a bench to stop and take a break.

A small historic market town in Dorset. With origins going back to the Saxon times. Several cafe's and shops in the high street. We like Gold Hill café at the top of the famous Gold Hill cobbled street (separate highlight).

King Alfred's Tower is managed by the National Trust and is part of the nearby Stourhead estate. The tower is a 49m high folly designed in 1772. It's believed to mark the site where King Alfred rallied his troops in 878.

great views from the B3081 on Charlton Down. Either hard won after the long climb up the zig-zags and then the drag up the downs or the beginning of an awesome fast descent. The high point is about 263m which gives a good view in all directions.

Features in the 100 greatest road climbs list (UK) along with Gold Hill in Shaftsbury so the two make a great loop. 93m height gain 2km distance and max of about 6% gradient.
