The gothic, five-storey, brick tower was built in 1750 by Lord of Horton Manor, Humphrey Sturt, who was an architect and a Dorset MP. The reason for its construction is not known but it’s possible Sturt planned to use it as an observatory for star gazing. At 43 metres high (140 feet) it was once claimed to be the tallest no-religious building in Britain. It’s now a Grade II* Listed Building. Visitors used to be able to enter the tower and look up to the top, as the floors had fallen away. Vodafone now use the tower for their masts and have undertaken restoration work. Their mobile phone signal masts are fixed to the sides, near the top of the tower. In the 1960s a cock fighting scene in the film The Mayor of Casterbridge was filmed at Horton Tower starring Terence Stamp and Julie Christie.

The pathway leading to Batchelor's lane from the Tower is easy to cycle past. Heading South East from the Tower (downhill), as soon as you see a hedge in the left-hand field, you'll notice the path entrance directly opposite on your right.

The Spire is a wonderful community pub in a Methodist church on Poole's high street. Food is freshly prepared, delicious and reasonably priced.

I love to catch the ferry and cycle to swanage and back , recommend Shellbay , Studland . Its a national trust site , its free to enter for everyone on a bike as they make there money from car parking . They have a cafe there next to the beach the views are so NICE , apart from the naturist bit further down . Too many floppy bits to cope with . I have pushed my bike with my partner on the firm sand next to the sea back to the ferry back from here , but my girlfriend wasn't impressed as she found it too much hard work , and at one point threw her bike to the ground not wanting to push it anymore . She then realised that its an art to push your bike not in the sea or on the loose sand , but on the firm bit . : )

Ferry is back in operation. 😆💪

Wimborne Minster is an atmospheric market town with a 1300 year old church of cathedral-like proportions. the stained glass windows, the organ with trumpets above and the astronomical clock alone are worth a visit.

The ferry is not there. It is having an overhaul in Falmouth. Not due back just yet.

You're not far from historic Poole Quay and historic old town. You can get boats from the quayside taking you back to Wareham (in the summer mainly), which might not be such a bad idea if you want to avoid that bad stretch of road between Wareham and Poole. Or you can jump on a train

The Twin Sails Bridge is a double leaved bascule bridge. It spans the Backwater channel linking Holes Bay with Poole Harbour. It was opened in March 2012.
