Beautiful spot great scenery and history Castle grounds definitely worth a visit

Amazing! I wasn't expecting such a castle in the middle of Newark when cycling through.👍 Looks like it would be well worth a visit if you have time.

Gunthorpe Lock is one of the largest locks on the River Trent which was once a major trading route. It's still possible to see commercial barges, but now it's better known for great waterway walks.

Combine a visit to the castle with a picnic, watching the Trent roll by. There are lots of quiet lanes approaching from the south.

Newark Castle ruins are set in lovely, formal gardens bordered by the remaining walls of the castle which was partly destroyed in 1646 at the end of the English Civil War.

Newark Castle has weathered many historic storms. After the British Civil War, it was deliberately vandalised and as it stands now, partially destroyed, it acts as a reminder of Newark's turbulent history. This listed 12th century monument is set in beautifully maintained Green Flag winning gardens, with the River Trent flowing beside them. Designed by eminent Victorian landscape architect, H.E.
