5월 25, 2025, Priory Church of St George, Dunster
Almost nothing reliable is known about the life of Saint George, to whom this church was dedicated, but veneration of him stretches back to early Christianity. A martyr identified with George is said to have lived in the third century. The legend of Saint George as the dragon slayer, however, is quite well known and widespread; he is often depicted—in paintings or statues—as the conqueror of the monster, often as a knight on horseback. The feast day of the very popular Saint George in the calendar of saints is celebrated on April 23rd in both the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches. Among other things, he is the patron saint of the English kingdom, and some of the orders and decorations awarded there bear his name.

4월 2, 2025, Porlock Hill Climb
Tackling Porlock Hill westwards from the village on the A39, prepare for an immediate, brutal ascent. The climb bites hard almost instantly, throwing its infamous 25% ramps at you very early, particularly around the tight hairpins. Experience the intense effort required in your lowest gears, feeling the steepness challenge every pedal stroke. As you winch yourself upwards through the woods, glance back (when safe!) at the rapidly unfolding, stunning views over Porlock Bay. Be aware you'll be sharing this famously steep A-road with other vehicles. After battling the steepest sections, the gradient lessens slightly, but the climb persists relentlessly until you emerge onto the exposed Exmoor moorland at the summit and breathtaking views over the Bristol Channel.

A song that—originally from the American gospel tradition—has traveled the world, fitting perfectly for this church, which the parish has entrusted to the patron saint of "All Saints." "Oh when the Saints go marching in, oh when the Saints go marching in, oh Lord, I want to be in that number, oh when the Saints go marching in." Over the decades, new versions of the lyrics have repeatedly emerged; the original text cannot be verified due to the early oral tradition. Many artists have taken up the gospel song and released their own interpretations, such as Bruce Springsteen with his session band at a concert in Dublin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6eKkirEcgE

6월 8, 2024, Dunster Watermill
Using the power of moving water to drive a mill wheel is an ancient invention of the human spirit of discovery, the origins of which can be traced back to times long past. Thanks to such a construction, human or animal muscle power could be easily replaced by the power of the natural elements through a watercourse - natural or artificially created - in order to grind grain into corn or press oil from fruit, for example. There are essentially two different ways of driving watermills: * Either the flowing water simply hits the blades of the water wheel from below to set it in motion; or * the water is guided above the wheel - usually through a so-called "mill channel" - and falls onto the blades; this type of construction is more efficient due to natural gravity.

This late medieval stone bridge - originally 'gallows bridge' - across the River Avill once carried packhorses bringing fleeces from Exmoor to the Somerset market town of Dunster. The town had become a centre of the wool trade by the 13th century, when it was the main source of England's wealth.

Fully restored watermill A restored 18th-century watermill built on the site of a mill mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1086. The mill is set in peaceful surroundings alongside the River Avill and at the entrance to the Dunster Castle River gardens. The watermill is fully operational. You can often see original milling here and even buy the flour produced.

Beautiful old church. Wonderful stain glass window. Set in a beautiful, well-kept churchyard on the side of a hill at the top of the village.

Dunster is almost indecently pretty and exactly how you would imagine an English village to be... If only the traffic didn't meander through. Between us Komootlers: don't come by car, there are only a few (expensive) parking spaces. Better walk here from Minehead, the path through the forest is beautiful!

Coming from the direction of the tea room, you either turn around here or pay the entrance fee for the mill, the gardens and the castle. Currently that's 16 pounds per person. We actually just wanted to see the gardens, but there is only one type of ticket. But it was definitely worth it, we spent a very long time here and can recommend it.
