Built by W.M. Hardy in 1886-87 entirely of local stone. The 'castle' was never a real castle: it was purpose-built by Burt as a restaurant for the visitors to his estate. The castle played a part in the evolution of radio and telecommunications. A team of Marconi's engineers used the roof of the castle in the 1890s for some of their early wireless experiments to transmit to the Isle of Wight. The castle passed through the hands of many owners until in 1973 it was bought by Dorset County Council. It was designated as a listed building at Grade II in 1983.

Named after the dramatic castle ruins that sit on the high above the village, Corfe Castle is a delight to explore. Built strategically at a gap in the Purbeck Ridge, the castle dates back to the 10th century and is today owned by the National Trust. The village is built from characteristic grey Purbeck limestone and boasts a wealth of places to eat and drink, as well as many accommodation options. The walking in the region is superb, with the heaths, hills and, of course, the excellent coast path.

Get here early and on a clear day.... you'll be hard pushed to find a better place to catch a beautiful sunrise. John Mowlem, a Swanage-born man, was a stonemason and builder. He was the founder of the quarrying and construction company Mowlem. He and his nephew and business partner George Burt wanted to give something back to their home town, which was the source of their Portland and Purbeck limestone, popular for building at the time. John Mowlem built the Mowlem Institute, a reading room and public library, in 1862. George Burt purchased an undulating tract of land covering Durlston Head during the same year. This estate, the Durlston Estate, included quarries that supplied their firm with limestone. Burt developed this estate as a tourist attraction. Burt established the Durlston Estate upon the crest of the hill and here he built his folly Durlston Castle. The castle was designed by the Weymouth architect G.R. Crickmay (1830-1907) and built by W.M. Hardy in 1886-87 entirely of local stone. The 'castle' was never a real castle: it was purpose-built by Burt as a restaurant for the visitors to his estate. The castle played a part in the evolution of radio and telecommunications. No but I do now thanks very much: Corfe Castle is considered to be the inspiration for Enid Blyton's Kirrin Island, which had its own similar castle.

Did you know that the sight of Corfe Castle ruins used to be a huge source of inspiration for Enid Blyton and her Famous Five books 📚?

Corfe Castle stands above the village of the same name on the Isle of Purbeck peninsula in the English county of Dorset. Built by William the Conqueror, the castle dates to the 11th century. It commands a gap in the Purbeck Hills on the route between Wareham and Swanage. It was one of the earliest castles in England to be built at least partly using stone when the majority were built with earth and timber. It was a Royalist stronghold in the English Civil War, falling to the Parliamentarians in 1645. It is now owned by the National Trust and is pretty popular so can be pretty busy with around 250,000 visitors a year.

Durlston Head Castle (located at the beginning of this part of the Jurassic coastline which is UNESCO World Heritage since 2001, first in England) offers stunning views from its Belvedere over Swanage bay, It also has a nice cafe with a sun terrace, and a visitor centre with lots of information about the place. A perfect place to rest and chill out 😎🤩

High above this village towers the ruins of a castle that was built here by William the Conqueror. During the English Civil War (1642-1651), Corfe Castle remained a royal stronghold for a long time, but in 1645 it was blown up by supporters of Parliament. From the adjoining garden of the National Trust's tearoom you can clearly see how crooked the robust walls and gates have become as a result of gunpowder explosions.

Discover over a thousand years of history when visiting Corfe Castle and the surrounding village. The keep was built in the 12th century for King Henry 1st, the son of William the Conqueror. The castle was owned by friends of King Charles during the English civil war and successfully defended two separate sieges before falling to a treacherous son of Lady Bankes. Cromwell ordered the castle to be destroyed and the damage done is what you see today. The castle remained in the Bankes family until it was gifted to the National Trust in 1982. Now you can visit and wonder around the ruins and pretty village. There is a NT shop and cafe as well as bakery and other pubs in the area. Pay to enter unless you are a NT member. Open 10:00 - 17:00 everyday.

The Old Town Hall at Corfe Castle was passed to the Town Trust in 1888 and at that time was already more than 200 years old. The ground floor was built from secondary use of stone from the castle after it was destroyed during the Civil War. The single story thatched building was destroyed by fire in about 1680 and the present two story structure dates from the early 18th Century when it was the seat of the Mayor and Barons of the Ancient Borough of Corfe Castle with its Charter dating back to Queen Elizabeth I. The building is described in Hutchins as a ‘Little Gem’ and is Listed as Grade 2*. Given that the floor area of the Council Chamber is only 350 square feet it claims to be the smallest Town Hall in England. http://corfecastletowntrust.co.uk/town-hall/
