The quarry caves are closed now due to rock falls. And if you weren't aware, there is a bat cave located just off the main path as you go up the steep hill to the east, home to the Greater Horseshoe bat.

8월 11, 2024, Old Harry Rocks
Studland Bay is dominated by one of the south coast's most famous landmarks - Old Harry. It is part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and is managed by the National Trust. The chalk formations are popularly known as Old Harry Rocks, but the name Old Harry actually refers to the single chalk rock that stands furthest out to sea. Until 1896 there was another boulder called Old Harry's Wife, but erosion caused it to collapse into the sea, leaving only a stump. https://www.visit-dorset.com/listing/old-harry-rocks/130693301/

7월 11, 2024, St. Nicholas' Church, Worth Matravers
Saint NICHOLAS, Bishop of Myra, to whom the church in Worth Matravers is dedicated, is – alongside Saint Martin, Bishop of Tours in France – one of the most popular saints of all. His feast day in the calendar of saints, December 6th, is probably known to almost every child. On the eve of this day, children used to put their shoes or boots – which had of course been carefully polished – outside the door so that Saint Nicholas could fill them with gifts during the night. In more agricultural areas, it was also customary for children to put out a small gift of food for the donkey, Saint Nicholas's mount (according to another tradition, it was a white horse).

This church is named after Edward the Martyr, who was King of the English and was murdered on 18th March 978 by order of his stepmother, Queen Alfthryth. Edward was slain at the nearby Corfe Castle, the ruins of which are just a short walk from here. The church dates back to the 12th century, though it underwent major restoration in the mid 19th century.

3월 22, 2024, Winspit Quarry Caves
Winspit is a disused quarry on the cliffs near Worth Matravers in the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset, England. To the west and east are the hills of West Man and East Man. Until around 1940 Winspit was used as a stone quarry, providing stone for buildings in London. During World War II it was used as a site for naval and air defences. After the war the caves were opened to the public. The quarry is now a lesser-known tourist attraction. Recently many of Winspit's caves have been closed off for public safety and bat conservation. In March 2022, it was announced that the National Trust had purchased the 350 acre Weston Farm, including Winspit and its bat caves, adding to its other landholdings in the village and its vicinity such as Spyway.

10월 8, 2023, St Edward the Martyr Church, Corfe Castle
Named after the murder of St. Edward the Martyr in 978, this church was built in the 12th century. During the Civil War (1642-1646), the masonry was used for target practice, which is why you can still see shot marks inside and outside the building. In the mid-19th century, it underwent a major restoration in which the walls were demolished and rebuilt, except for the tower.

This is one of the more than two hundred quarries that existed in the 18th century in the Worth Matravers, Langton Matravers, and Swanage area, from which materials were extracted for the construction of major buildings in London.

Built in the early 1100s AD, this is one of the oldest churches in Dorset. It is not known with certainty whether it was built or reconstructed, as there are indications that there may have been a church here already in the late Saxon period.

The trail south-west of Corfe Castle offers great running and awesome views. If you climb up the hill a bit, the views are even better. Corfe Castle is one of the most iconic castles still partially standing. It's over 1,000 years old and was partially destroyed in the English civil war. Now managed by the National Trust it's paid entry, but you can get great views for free.

Knowle Hill at 145 m is the high point of the ridge which runs south-west from Corfe Castle. It's a wonderful ridgeline to run, with grassy trails underfoot and awesome views across Purbeck. If you are heading towards Corfe, the view of the castle from this ridge is the best way to see it.

Did you know that Corfe Castle was the place that is said to have given Enid Blyton her inspiration for the castle ruins of George‘s Kirrin Island in her „Famous Five“ books? ?! Looking at the ruins from a distance, say the Purbeck Way, for me even boosters the feeling of being right in the middle of a new Famous Five adventure :-)
