This church is named after Edward the Martyr, who was King of the English and was murdered on 18th March 978 by order of his stepmother, Queen Alfthryth. Edward was slain at the nearby Corfe Castle, the ruins of which are just a short walk from here. The church dates back to the 12th century, though it underwent major restoration in the mid 19th century.

Named after the murder of St. Edward the Martyr in 978, this church was built in the 12th century. During the Civil War (1642-1646), the masonry was used for target practice, which is why you can still see shot marks inside and outside the building. In the mid-19th century, it underwent a major restoration in which the walls were demolished and rebuilt, except for the tower.

From this spot, very close to the highest point of East Hill, you have splendid views of Corfe Castle and the surrounding area. Take a moment to stop and enjoy this wonder before continuing on your journey.

The trail south-west of Corfe Castle offers great running and awesome views. If you climb up the hill a bit, the views are even better. Corfe Castle is one of the most iconic castles still partially standing. It's over 1,000 years old and was partially destroyed in the English civil war. Now managed by the National Trust it's paid entry, but you can get great views for free.

Did you know that Corfe Castle was the place that is said to have given Enid Blyton her inspiration for the castle ruins of George‘s Kirrin Island in her „Famous Five“ books? ?! Looking at the ruins from a distance, say the Purbeck Way, for me even boosters the feeling of being right in the middle of a new Famous Five adventure :-)

The earliest known sitting official dates from 1280. It is named after St. Edward the Martyr who was murdered on March 18, 978 on the orders of Queen Alfthryth, his stepmother. The story goes that his body was hidden in a hovel where a blind woman discovered it. Her sight was restored when she found the body. The tower was built between the late 14th or early 15th centuries by the Beaufort family (Constables at the castle during this time). Their faces can still be seen in the church as John of Gaunt and his wife, Catherine, look high above the tower arch above the baptistery towards the west door. Edward III and his wife, Philippa, look at the altar. The tower rises to 65 feet outside. stedwardscorfecastle.co.uk

High above this village towers the ruins of a castle that was built here by William the Conqueror. During the English Civil War (1642-1651), Corfe Castle remained a royal stronghold for a long time, but in 1645 it was blown up by supporters of Parliament.
