This church is named after Edward the Martyr, who was King of the English and was murdered on 18th March 978 by order of his stepmother, Queen Alfthryth. Edward was slain at the nearby Corfe Castle, the ruins of which are just a short walk from here. The church dates back to the 12th century, though it underwent major restoration in the mid 19th century.

During the Civil War (1642-1646), the masonry was used for target practice, which is why you can still see shot marks inside and outside the building. In the mid-19th century, it underwent a major restoration in which the walls were demolished and rebuilt, except for the tower.

The trail south-west of Corfe Castle offers great running and awesome views. If you climb up the hill a bit, the views are even better. Corfe Castle is one of the most iconic castles still partially standing. It's over 1,000 years old and was partially destroyed in the English civil war. Now managed by the National Trust it's paid entry, but you can get great views for free.

Looking at the ruins from a distance, say the Purbeck Way, for me even boosters the feeling of being right in the middle of a new Famous Five adventure :-)
