At 650 feet (198 metres), Povington Hill is one of the highest of the Purbeck Hills. Views extend to Worbarrow Bay, the abandoned village of Tyneham, St. Aldhelm’s Head, Swyre Head and the English Channel beyond Gad Cliff to the south.

When the sun is out you could almost imagine yourself being abroad.

Another view that will take your breath away on a clear day, can see for miles.

It might take a big effort to hit the ridge but more than worthwhile once you do.

At peak or busy times these roads are rammed but worth a visit if you can time it right.

Be careful as it is unpaved. Passable on a road bike, and offers a good alternative to busy roads.

Good food and very welcoming. Plenty of cycling climbing around here, especially when the ranges are open.

Nice to look at although you cannot go into the grounds. I think you can rent it through the Landmark Trust. Woodsford Castle is a rare survivor of one side of a medieval fortified manor house. Standing near the River Frome the thatched roof is reputed to be the largest in Dorset. There is a convenient to pull in to have look.

Great view from the road or car park at the top of Grange Hill. You are at about 173m on the Purbeck Hills so there is nothing higher than you to the south and you have great views over Kimmerage Bay and out to sea.

lovely humped back bridge over the River Frome

This is the surviving part of a 14th-century castle, a rambling wing of great interest and charm, deep in Hardy country just outside Dorchester. Its roof has one of the largest expanses of thatch in the county. Just one side of the quadrangular castle, built in 1370 and probably added to an existing group of buildings, remains today.

Really good coffee here plus this is your chance to walk out to Chesil Beach and view the lagoon. The visitor centre is very good indeed with very nice souvenirs and information about the importance of the reserve
