A beautiful ancient bridge lovely views in all seasons x

There are documentary references to the building of "A Bridge on the River Stour adjacent to the White Mill" in the year 1175. Although the bridge you'll see today is probably a sixteenth century structure (somewhat hacked around by the Victorians). It is known, from an investigation of the foundations a few years ago, that the bridge stands on timber pilings which have themselves been carbon dated to the twelfth century. This is alleged to be the oldest bridge site in Dorset. Note the bridge warning plate "Any person wilfully damaging any part of this County Bridge will be guilty of Felony and upon conviction liable to be Transported For Life by the court"

From this beautiful multi-arched stone bridge, you can enjoy views of the River Stour as it flows through Blandford Forum. The only downside is that it has a sidewalk on only one side.

Tip: We have been here three times over the last few years and each time we managed to get a table in the café at the top of the street. One of the most beautiful views in England is made even more beautiful with cream tea or another treat! There's a car park and viewpoint at the top. Coming from the east is a long gradual climb. Coming from the west it is a short, sharp climb hitting 15% in places. But…going down (especially eastwards) makes it worth it.

The Crown is reportedly the oldest inn in Dorset and has been a residence since the 10th Century. The Inn joined the Hall and Woodhouse family in 1931 and in 2017 the company spent over £3 million on refurbishing the bedrooms, bar and dining room, resurrecting the beautiful Georgian Coaching Inn to its former splendour
