The monument was probably created around 1912-1919. The purpose of its creation and symbolism have not been clearly explained. According to one version, it commemorates the builders of the Toruń Fortress, according to another, it was made during free time by one of the Prussian regiments stationed in the Toruń garrison. There is also a version that the monument commemorates a Toruń pilot who died in this place in the crash of his plane. The inscription on the monument literally translates to "Stones praise", which, combined with fragments of mayor Stachowitz's speech found in the archival press during the unveiling of this work in December 1915, suggest that the monument was erected in honor of the soldiers of the German army who defeated the Russian army in 1914.
