9월 13, 2025, Exe Estuary Trail
Look out for an entrance onto a footpath on your right, which follows beside the railway tracks on your left, and the exe estuary on your right. The path is too narrow for cycling but great for walking and running.

Nice flat cycle path. But gets VERY busy with 2 wheeled, 2 legged and 4 legged visitors in the summer months. Watch how you go.

The man who does the ferry has lived a thousand lives - military, merchant seaman, fire service and that's just to start! Also, he has a card machine for crossing, unlike the Starcross ferry which is cash only.

Take the Topsham Ferry across the River Exe from Ferry Road in Topsham to Topsham Lock. It takes foot passengers, dogs and bikes. It doesn’t run everyday so check the website beforehand for running times: https://exeter.gov.uk/leisure-and-culture/sport-and-leisure/exeter-port-authority/topsham-ferry/

6월 14, 2023, Exeter Ship Canal
Exeter Ship Canal is a canal leading from (and beside) the River Exe to Exeter Quay in the city of Exeter, Devon. It was first constructed in the 1560s and was the first canal to be built in Britain since Roman times. It was also the first canal in England to use the pound lock. The canal was built to bypass the weirs that had been erected on the river by the Countess of Devon and later by the Earls of Devon, which prevented ships from reaching Exeter and forced them to unload at Topsham. The canal was enlarged and extended several times over the centuries and reached its present form in the 1830s. The canal basin was also built at that time and became a busy port with warehouses and workshops. Today, the canal is mainly used for leisure activities such as boating, walking and cycling. You can follow the Exe Estuary Trail alongside the canal and enjoy the scenic views of the river and the countryside.

Stunning little spot, sometimes great for a quick stop to drink, snack and take some pictures of the old lock keepers cottage. You can see I popped a really old picture of it in the photos section. The history that we often, run, walk or cycle past is all around us. The ferry runs some time of the year to cross over to Topsham which is a beautiful little village on the opposite side, great connections for running and cycling to Exmouth.

10월 24, 2022, Exeter Canal Lock Keeper's Cottage
Built in 1701, as a lock keepers cottage, at the time of great improvements to Trew's original canal, it doubled as both a lock keepers house and inn from the late eighteenth century. It was built of small Dutch bricks which were imported as ballast when Exeter was exporting serge to Holland.

7월 21, 2022, Exeter Ship Canal
The Exeter Ship Canal runs for five miles from the River Exe to Exeter Quay. Opened in 1566 it sees little ship traffic now due to the swing and lifting bridge which makes navigating it more challenging. You are now much more likely to see kayaks, canoes and paddleboards on the water with cyclists and walkers enjoying the flat path alongside it.

Taking the ferry across from Starcross to Exemouth can be a challenge lifting the bikes over the railway bridge but worth the effort.

A nice route, but watch out for dogs off leads and pedestrians walking 4 abreast

Here at Riversmeet where the rivers Clyst and Exe join, you can get close to the mudflats action thanks to the brilliant viewing platform that's part of RSPB Bowling Green Marshes. Reach it via the narrow, often muddy paths through the gate near the bird hide. There's great signage to help you identify wading birds, ducks and seabirds, as well as a phenomenal view downstream and across to the Lympstone Marine Camp and Exmouth beyond.

1월 20, 2021, Topsham Dock
Once upon a time, Topsham was one of the busiest ports in England although it's hard to imagine now. The dock is situated in a particularly useful position, even though the river was initially navigable for boats all the way to Exeter. The maritime history of the town is genuinely incredible and you can learn all about it at the Topsham Museum. Today, the dock offers lovely views over the moored boats on the Exe. There's an antique shop full of interesting items and a pub with lots of outside seating.

This lovely church stands on the site of an older iteration, dating back 1,000 years. After a fire in the 1600s, much of the church eventually had to be pulled down and rebuilt. As the rebuild covered some existing graves, the headstones were used as paving slabs inside.

This little bridge spans the Exeter Ship Canal and links the foot/cycle path to the Topsham passenger ferry. It's a picturesque lookout for the canal, especially as you look northwards to the old lock cottage (a cafe in summer). Swans, herons and ducks can often be seen here and there's a bench to take a rest on and watch the reeds wafting in the breeze.
