The coast here is no longer as spectacular as north of Land's End, but it still has its charms.

Lovely Gardens with a very unique story to tell - worth reading or watching. Cost is 22.50 pounds for adults in the 2023 season.

The magnificent garden, laid out at the end of the 19th century, fell into disrepair after the Second World War and was completely overgrown. Finally, one could hardly recognize anything of its original splendor - it was lost "lost". The Lost Garden was then rediscovered in the 1990s and restored to its original form by Tim Smit. In the meantime huge rhododendron trees had grown. This story makes the garden so special. A once lost garden has been revived in its old splendour. But even without that history, it's a very worth seeing place.

Roche Rock is a granite outcrop looming 20m high. On top of the rock is the ruin of a chapel built in 1409. There are plenty of legends surrounding the chapel. It is thought to have been lived in by a hermit and his daughter, hence another popular name for it being Roche Rock Hermitage. In medieval times it is said to have been occupied by a landowning family who had leprosy and wanted to protect loved ones from catching it. The demon of Jan Tregeagle, an evil Cornish magistrate who was said to have made a pact with the devil in return for power, fame and success, tried to hide at Roche Rock after being set a series of impossible tasks to keep him out of hell until Judgement Day. When the wind is blowing you might even hear wailing coming from the chapel walls.

Polstreath Beach is a nice place to rest along the coast path. It’s accessible from the coastal path from Mevagissey.

The coastal path from here has very nice views but requires some fitness level.

The Mud Maid and The Giants Head are the two figures of the artist Susan Hill in Sculpture Park - the two nestle in nature with beautiful vegetation.

From wiki: The Lost Gardens of Heligan (Cornish: Lowarth Helygen, meaning "willow tree garden"), near Mevagissey in Cornwall, are one of the most popular botanical gardens in the UK. The gardens are typical of the 19th century Gardenesque style with areas of different character and in different design styles.

Heligan Cafe. Good food. Good for vegans and vegetarians while also (so I'm told) having good meat from neighbouring Lobbs farm. Pizza, Jacket potatoes, quiche, frittata and salad are our favourites.

In the narrow streets of Mevagissey you find myriad shops, workshops, galleries, cafes and pubs, as well as many old buildings made of cob and slate. There are plenty of traditional fish and chip shops to try here, too. The picturesque town was once the centre of Cornwall’s pilchard fishery and, even today, still has a small working harbour with a few dozen fishing boats.

Don't know if you knew but in that photo of portholland if you look at the far distance where you can see that car parked that is the coastal path which goes up to Caerhays.. actually it's not a coastal path it's a public highway.. Don't Think for a minute you can get a car up there.. but motorcycles and certainly mountain bikes are totally legal..giid tip eh! 👍

There is no Mevagissey Bay. Mevagissey is in St. Austell Bay. Obviously the comment was written by another incomer. There is a harbour in this little fishing village, but there is no harbor. Where on earth do these people come from?

Hello, every one this was my first visit to East Portholland, right next door to Portholland, very small, but great vistas from the land onto the Beaches. The tide was out just a great beach, it was over cast & raining, but im sure when its sunny out must be awesome. Have a little pass to eat, also looks like a great place to see if your walking the South Coastal Trail, cheers happy biking & Hiking

The garden is really worth seeing, large and very versatile, embedded in the landscape, hiking boots are quite appropriate. We took the ferry from Fowey to Mevagissey - a half hour worth of sea voyage with views of St. Austell Bay.
