Not for the faint-hearted! If heading north towards Bude; on the downhill, cover your brakes or risk a cliff launch! Then up what's locally known as the corkscrew... take it wide! There is no descent launch for the up on the other side! However, the effort is well worth the stunning views of the coast!

Take a short break and enjoy the view. There's also a bench nearby.

The manor of Crackington was recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) when it was one of several manors held by Berner from Robert, Count of Mortain. There was half a hide of land and land for 3 ploughs. There were 1 plough, 2 serfs, 6 smallholders, 4 acres of underwood, 20 acres of pasture, 4 cattle, 3 pigs and 25 sheep. The value of the manor was 10 shillings though it had formerly been worth £1 sterling. Until the nineteenth century, Crackington Haven was a small port similar to many others on the north coast of Cornwall. Limestone and coal were imported and slate and other local produce were exported. After the railways reached the district in 1893 the village could be reached more easily (from the North Cornwall Railway station at Otterham) so holidaymaking became more common.

In Britain's top ten geological sites (rated by the Geological Society of London), Millock is a tiny valley that spits out dramatically into the sea. The picturesque beach cottage and surrounding land recently went on the market for an eye watering £1.7 million. It is a wonderful destination for a hike from either Crackington Haven in the South or Widemouth Bay to the north.

Three routes into or out - all with steep sections. The coastal route takes you to high cliff at about 850 feet above sea level and up to 1 in 3 gradient. Enjoy.

On the SW Coast Path heading south, the last opportunity to stop before Crackington Haven.

A great cafe to enjoy a coffee or something more substantial. Overlooking the Weir, there are plenty of wildfowl to enjoy on the water. Always a strong possibility of a Kingfisher.

Just east of the A39 Atlantic HIghway is the Helebridge Basin. Regeneration work has been taking place here. The basin has been dredged and the canalside has been cleared so that visitors can get an idea of what the area looked like when the canal was in use.

The Old Laundry gives a glimpse into the canal's industrial past. Now self-catering holiday accommodation it was originally a saw mill, used to produce timber for the canal boats. As the use of canals decreased, the saw mill was repurposed as a laundry for the developing holiday trade. The grade II listed building was converted into four houses in the 1980s.

Crackington beach is a small cove flanked by high cliffs which make for a lovely view from the road. Although only small, here you will find a cafe, hotel and public toilets plus sections of both shingle and sandy beaches.

Cycling along Marine Drive offers fantastic views of the sea and the Cornish coastline. Here you can look south onto Widemouth Bay and beyond.

Widemouth Bay is a long sandy beach popular with families and surfers. During the summer you'll find a cafe, an ice-cream & snack shack, plenty of surf schools and public toilets. There are fantastic views of the beach and coastline from the car park. There are lifeguards present May to September and at weekends/half term during October.

Milook Haven has a pebble beach so doesn't see the huge crowds of other nearby sandy spots. This makes it a wildlife haven and a good place to seek calm. It is surrounded by cliffs which makes the scenery very dramatic. The road south from Milook is very steep at 30%!

Bude Canal was built in 1823 to allow the transportation of mineral rich sand from Bude and the surrounding area inland to fertilize agricultural land. This revolutionised farming in the area and also allowed slate and granite to be transported to the sea. The canal was abandoned in 1891 and restoration is in progress.
