Standing proudly on a limestone cliff above the River Wye, Chepstow Castle is a magnificent fortress with a history that stretches back nearly 1,000 years. Founded in 1067 by Earl William fitz Osbern, a close friend of William the Conqueror, the castle was one of the first Norman strongholds in Wales. These days, it is an interesting place to visit and affords some stunning views.

The castle is open from March until October Sunday to Wednesday. It is closed on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays for private events.

St Briavels (pronounced Brevels, once known as 'Ledenia Parva' (Little Lydney)),is a medium-sized village and civil parish in the Royal Forest of Dean in west Gloucestershire, England; close to the England-Wales border, and 5 miles (8 km) south of Coleford. It stands almost 800 feet (240 m) above sea level on the edge of a limestone plateau above the valley of the River Wye, above an ancient meander of the river. To the west, Cinder Hill drops off sharply into the valley. It is sheltered behind the crumbling walls of the 12th century St Briavels Castle.

St Briavels Castle is a moated Norman castle at St Briavels in the English county of Gloucestershire. The castle is noted for its huge Edwardian gatehouse that guards the entrance. St Briavels Castle was originally built between 1075 and 1129 as a royal administrative centre for the Forest of Dean. During the 13th century the castle became first a favourite hunting lodge of King John, and then the primary centre in England for the manufacture of quarrels, large numbers of which were required for crossbows in medieval warfare. The castle was transferred many times between royal favourites in the 14th and 15th centuries and slowly declined in appearance and importance. St Briavels Castle became used primarily as a court and as a notorious debtors' prison, conditions being documented by the prison reformer John Howard in 1775. Following local riots and a parliamentary investigation in the 1830s, reforms in the 19th century brought an end to the castle's use as a prison. Extensive renovation at the turn of the 20th century allowed St Briavels Castle to be taken over as a Youth Hostel in 1948. It remains in this role today, owned by English Heritage and open to the public. The castle is classed as a Grade I listed building and as a Scheduled Monument.

The Old Wye Bridge is the original crossing in Chepstow between Wales & England over the River Wye which has one of the highest tidal ranges in the world. Fantastic views up & down the river incl. Chepstow Castle.

Berkeley Castle's origins date back to the 11th century and except for a period of royal ownership by the Tudors, it has remained with the Berkeley family. It is traditionally belived that King Edward II was murder at Berkeley Castle in 1327.

Built in 1511, Thornbury Castle is a delightful Tudor country house that was actually never used as a castle. In 1535, Henry VIII stayed at the castle with Anne Boleyn. After the Civil War, the castle fell into disrepair until being rescued in and renovated in 1824 by the affluent Howard family. From 1966 to 1986, the castle was used as a restaurant where famous chefs such as Nigel Slater and Simon Gault began their culinary careers. Today, it is used as a luxury hotel, wedding venue and restaurant. Although pricey, it is worth stopping for a coffee to soak up the stunning surroundings. On a lighter note, 3 weeks ago I did a 53 mile round trip to Chepstow only to find, on getting there, that I'd left both my phone and camera (and money!) at home. Doh!

Dating back to the 11th century Berkeley Castle has belonged to the Berkeley family for over eight centuries. The castle has witness turbulent history – believed to be the murder scene of King Edward II in 1327 after the castle was ransacked by forces in 1326. The beautiful castle was restored in 2006. Today, you can explore the well-preserved castle and its gardens from 10.30am - 5pm daily (last admission 4pm). Tickets for adults cost £12.50 and include a guided tour.
