10월 21, 2025, View of the Wye Valley from Symonds Yat Rock

Symonds Yat is a wonderful place to come, but even better to catch it in the autumn when the trees are in full colour, with the sun on them to make them really shine.

Coppett Hill is a striking landmark in the Lower Wye Valley known for its stunning views and excellent walking trails. It's located south of Goodrich village and lies to the west of Kerne Bridge and southwest of Symonds Yat. The hill is nestled between two expansive loops of the River Wye making a great setting for hiking.

Buck Stone at 280 metres is a UK P100, or 'hump,' with 100 metres of prominence. The top is marked by a trig point, and the Buck Stone itself, which is a bit of a monster. It is a wedge-shaped lump that looks like it weighs at least several tons. There is also an odd-looking man-made dragon's tooth of a stone, which has an indent in the top. I am curious to know what this is? The location makes for fine views out over the countryside, and makes for a great picnic spot.

It was a very nice and enjoyable walk good if you don't like very hill walks. when we got to the caves we decided to take another footpath that said it was quicker and because it was raining and the path was next to a cliff face we were stuck for like half an hour until we found a dirt road that lead down the hill . other than that good walk and cool bridge

11월 5, 2023, River Wye

The Wye was voted the nation’s favourite river in 2010. It starts not far from my home town in Brecon in mid-Wales and trundles south for some 150 miles before meeting the Severn. I have forgotten how many times I have cycled it, run it and kayaked it. Simply my favourite place on earth!

The Kymin is an 18th-century round house and naval temple on a prominent hill, set within 9 acres (4 ha) of grounds. It's a fair slog from Monmouth but you are rewarded with wonderful views over the Wye Valley and the town below as you climb. Once you reach the top, the views are breathtaking and there are benches to stop and soak it all in. Absolute bliss. The site is owned by the National Trust.

A temple that was inspired by Britain’s naval supremacy at the height of the British Empire and built in 1800. This was inspired by Nelson's victory in the Battle of the Nile in 1798. Nelson came to see it in 1802 with Lady Hamilton and her husband Sir William. That must have been an interesting weekend!

This is one of two hand pulled ferries in the Symonds Yat area. The other one is just upstream from here and not that far away. The ferry here at the Saracen's Head crossing is iconic and steeped in local history and makes for a lovely cheap outing across the river.

Symonds Yat is one of the most iconic and beautiful locations in the entire Wye valley. It is a kayak, climbing, hiking, canoeing, boating and cycling mecca for active sports people or families alike. I have spent many a sunny afternoon hiking, walking or canoeing through this place. A simply charming village nestled in a deep valley with the East side separated from the West side by a long drive or a short ferry crossing. There is a good Inn here along with a canoe hire centre and there are also toilets on site.

Jump off the bike and head on foot down the footpath east of the road to reach the Symonds Yat Rock. Symonds Yat Rock harbours the remnants of an Iron Age hillfort, erected roughly 2,500 years in the past. Presently, this locale stands as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, where traces of the fortifications endure as a series of embankments and trenches. In more contemporary times, Yat Rock and the Wye Valley have gained renown as the birthplace of British tourism. Beginning in the 18th century, they achieved popularity thanks to the efforts of Reverend William Gilpin, a trailblazer of the 'Picturesque' movement. His literary works left an indelible mark on the appeal of English landscape painting and served as inspiration for Romantic poets. Symonds Yat Rock viewpoint enjoys a well-earned reputation as one of the nation's prime spots for observing peregrine falcons. Yet, with a touch of patience, a multitude of bird species can be sighted here. Goshawks offer close-up viewing, sparrowhawks are frequent denizens nesting among the valley's trees, while soaring buzzards often grace the skies. Spring and autumn migrations frequently draw ospreys to this locale, with tawny owls occasionally spotted. Meanwhile, nearby nesting sites typically host barn owls, ravens, and kestrels.
