Fabulous and iconic Sandstone building, centrepiece of Ross on Wye.

One of the finest hills in the Malverns with it's Iron Age Hillfort (yes another one on the Malverns!), and superb views west across Eastnor Park. It used to be heavily wooded on the Eastern Side, but Ash Die-back disease has caused a huge number of large mature Ash trees to be felled in recent times. This is still a hill to be savoured and you will not see too many people here either.

This is quite a spectacular place but quite rightly the Conservators and local authorities have securely fenced it off as there have been a large number of drownings here over the years. People have jumped off the low cliffs inot the freezing cold water and have also collided with old machinery and vehicles that are hidden under the water.

Enjoy the walk up from Clifford Mesne, and then taken in the expansive views. Don't miss the copse at the top, planted to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee.

Midsummer Hill rises in the southern part of the Malvern Hills and is a very worthy objective. Site of a former hillfort, along with neighbouring Hollybush Hill, it provides extensive views, with the impressive Eastnor Castle visible in the Herefordshire countryside. A hike to the top could be combined with Herefordshire Beacon to the north, or a longer outing traversing the entire Malvern ridge.

Midsummer Hill is situated in the range of Malvern Hills that runs approximately 13 kilometres (8 mi) north-south along the Herefordshire-Worcestershire border. It lies to the south of Herefordshire Beacon with views to Eastnor Castle. It has an elevation of 284 metres (932 ft). To the north is Swinyard Hill. It is the site of an Iron Age hill fort which spans Midsummer Hill and Hollybush Hill. The hillfort is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and is owned by Natural England. It can be accessed via a footpath which leads south from the car park at British Camp on the A449 or a footpath which heads north from the car park in Hollybush on the A438. The hillfort is very unusual in that the ramparts enclose two hills and the intervening valley. Bowden speculates that the spring within the valley "enhance[s] the position of the hillfort as a site of symbolic value". Source: Wikipedia

Nestled by the River Wye, Ross-on-Wye is a charming market town. Originating from the first travel guidebook by William Gilpin in 1782, it inspired picturesque tourism. It has independent stores, 19th-century mock-Gothic walls, a Gazebo Tower folly, and colourful homes cascading down the hillside to the river.

Fine views to Eastnor Castle and the rolling hills of Herefordshire - and all the way to Wales.

Perched above the River Wye, Ross is a pretty market town that played a significant role in nature tourism's history. In 1770, William Gilpin started organising boat trips down the Wye. Some believe that this was the very origin of the Picturesque Movement, leading people to appreciate the natural world and its beauty. Ross has a lot to offer the hiker. Gateway to the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean, it is also within easy driving distance of the Brecon Beacons, the Cotswolds and the Malverns.

Gloucester cathedral showcases 1000 years of architectural styles from Norman through to Perpendicular and even the present day as repair and rennovation continues. Pop in and admire the fan-faulted medieval cloisters, colourful Great East Window, and the decorative Lady Chapel, which houses some of the finest Arts & Crafts glass in the country.

The main face shows a cross-section through most of the Preambrian rock that makes up the core of the Hills. The face itself exhibits many rock types including diorite, granite, gneiss, schist, pegmatite and dolerite. The evidence of the complex history of earth movement which formed the Hills can be seen by multiple joints, fractures, faults and shears, which make identifying changes in rock types difficult. Within these features mineral deposits such as haematite, calcite and epidote can be found. The nature of the contact between the Malverns Complex and the overlying Silurian rocks has been a matter of debate for many years, although the balance of opinion now favours an unconformable relationship. A fault which cuts the Silurian sequence and extends into the Malverns Complex below is probably of Upper Carboniferous age, associated with the uplift of the hills.'
