What can I say about watery lane? It gets the climb up to the woods over and done with quickly, away from cars and mostly under a canopy of trees. Very hard to 'good heavens' to ride up. Rooty and rocky.

Always a good challenge and changes according to season and conditions. For me it is a slow plod with the aim of reaching the Beacon without stopping or dabbing. Tend not to come down this way as lots of horses and blind corners.

Far more terrifying than the first section up to Painswick Road. 400 metres of above 20% gradient "road", loose and mucky in places, which makes wide tyres and picking your line essential. The top does improve in surface quality though. I had to get out of the saddle to get up it even with a slightly less than 1:1 gear ratio - 32 front - 34 rear. This caused me a couple of wheel spins on my 40mm tyres, but I pushed through. A real test of character and an amazing sense of achievement when I got to the crossroad at the end of the steep stuff.

A lovely long bridal path winding down between farm fields. Some steeper rocky sections towards the top but then faster, and less steep further on down. Downhill makes you smile!

Technical climb. Rocky, Rory and usually muddy!

If you're looking for really big hills this isn't one of them. From the Green Street barrier to the top this climb is only 0.3 miles long. Strava says it is about 8.9% and Komoot is pretty much similar. However the road sign does as 14%. I would say the steepest bit is the last 20 metres or so at the end. The climb from Ermin Street to the barrier isn't to taxing. As a no through road the only traffic you 'should' get is residential and possibly deliveries.

The first mention of a church was towards the end of the 1100's when Abbott Serlo had a pension of 10 shillings from the Chapel at Mattesdune, and Ralph de Mattesdunc gave the church to the Abbey of Gloucester. Slow climb to start. A couple of flat spots to catch your breath and a bit of a kick near the top. During the week this route can be a 'rat run' with cars at speed - be careful.
