Nice ascent from Crosskeys, but watch out for very overgrown pathways on the Machen side. Great views from the top!

Built in 1280, this castle has a fascinating life story. It is the second largest castle and grounds in UK, slightly smaller than Windsor castle. The water defenses are now home to plenty of birds and the grounds offer fantastic views of this stunning castle

Very helpful staff who kindly refilled our water bottles - also pointed out that on entering the main carpark there is a public tap next to the unit/toilets on the left.

A small summit above Risca. Known locally as the "Twmp" (the hump), the pimple or the nipple, due to the shape of the mound on the summit.

This is a section of the Taff Trail NCR8 that is unpaved and muddy. Long may this last as the trail has important industrial archeological history. You can still see the stone seats that held the wooden rails of the old tramway in place. For more on the significance, Google Richard "Richard Trevithick (13 April 1771 – 22 April 1833) was a British inventor and mining engineer. The son of a mining captain, and born in the mining heartland of Cornwall, Trevithick was immersed in mining and engineering from an early age. He was an early pioneer of steam-powered road and rail transport, and his most significant contributions were the development of the first high-pressure steam engine and the first working railway steam locomotive.[1] The world's first locomotive-hauled railway journey took place on 21 February 1804, when Trevithick's unnamed steam locomotive hauled a train along the tramway of the Penydarren Ironworks, in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales.[2][3] Turning his interests abroad Trevithick also worked as a mining consultant in Peru and later explored parts of Costa Rica. Throughout his professional career he went through many ups and downs and at one point faced financial ruin, also suffering from the strong rivalry of many mining and steam engineers of the day. During the prime of his career he was a well-known and highly respected figure in mining and engineering, but near the end of his life he fell out of the public eye." - from wikipedia. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Trevithick

10월 11, 2022, Caerphilly Castle
Caerphilly Castle has had a £5m investment into conservation and repair of the structure - from late October '22 the scaffold and sheeting that protected the works will be removed. Caerphilly Castle is the biggest castle in Wales, and second biggest in the UK. Wales’s very own Leaning Tower, even wonkier than that of Pisa — courtesy of Civil War gunpowder is probably the castle’s best-loved feature.

Great single track. If you want the track to yourself, mid week and early is best. On a ebike it takes between 1.0 and 1.5 hours to get around it. I guess between 1.5 and 3.0 hours on a mountain bike without a motor, giving you plenty of time to tackle the CAFALL trail which is about the same length and starts from the same place. It is a red trail, but not particularly technical.

Beautiful little walk to take in a trig point and a fantastic Iron Age fort. Twmbarlwm, known locally known as 'the Twmp' (translation: hump), 'the Nipple' or the Pimple because of the mound that lies at its summit, is a hill situated 2 km (1.2 mi) to the northeast of Risca in South Wales. It is often mistakenly referred to as a mountain but is actually a hill due to being under 600 m (2,000 ft). It is 419 m (1,375 ft) high and is a well-known landmark throughout the region. It commands extensive views across what is now the M4 corridor, over Newport and Cwmbran - with part of it coming into Cwmbran - and out over the Bristol Channel. From this spot, you get a stunning view of Caerphilly Castle over the reflective water of the moat. With massive walls, towers, gatehouses, and water defences covering 30 acres (12 ha), Caerphilly is the mightiest castle in Wales and is second in size only to Windsor Castle in the whole of Britain. The castle was built from 1268 after the rise of the powerful Prince of Wales, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, persuaded Marcher lord Gilbert de Clare that he needed a fortress building fast.
