하이라이트 • 역사적 장소

Dove Holes are a series of three impressive caves beside the River Dove. They were formed around 350 million years ago by glacial meltwater. It’s great fun climbing up into the caves but take care as the rocks are slippery.

Impressive little archway, I didn't but I believe you can walk all the way up and come down a different way

Wolfscote Dale is apparently the area in which the last wild wolf in England was killed in the 15th Century

In 1925 this cave was excavated and explorers discovered the remains of “ten individuals, mostly children, two bronze brooches, one penannular bronze brooch, bronze pins, a fragment of bronze chain, nine beads of various types, an antler cheek-piece, and other objects, including Roman, Romano-British and Medieval pottery”. Apparently the cave was later home to a family with 6 children!

Thor's Cave is a limestone Karst cave accessible above the River Manifold. It's a popular destination but very much worth the detour if you're running in this area.

Whether you love hiking, fancy a peaceful picnic in picturesque surroundings, are visiting by yourself or with your family, there really is something for everyone at Dovedal

Overrun in June with Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. It’s a shame these hordes all converge on the same time and places. Would think they might try something a little less of a tourist hotspot.

Quiet, peaceful. Quite rocky underfoot. Definitely worth walking through.

Wolfscote Dale is an idyllic limestone dale, close to Hartington. The crystalline River Dove flows through the heart of this steep-sided dale, which has dramatic screes, cliffs and caves towering above it. The wildflower meadows beside the river are the perfect place to stop for a moment and take it all in. While equally beautiful, Wolfscote is usually quieter than nearby Dovedale.

Reynard’s Cave is located high up on the bank of Dovedale. The caves, formed by the erosion of limestone, were used as a shelter by hunters from around 13,000 BCE. These days, they are an excellent place to explore and anyone can freely access them.

Reynard’s Cave is located high up on the eastern bank of the gorge of Dovedale in the Peak District. The gorge is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is owned by the National Trust. A natural arch frames the entrance to the cave, which is said to be named after a local brigand who used it as a refuge. To the left is a smaller cave known as Reynard’s Kitchen. As is typical of many such caves in this region, both are fairly shallow in depth. The caves were formed by the erosion of limestone and have a long history, having been used as shelter by hunters from around 13,000 BCE. The larger was also used for tombs in the Neolithic era. Further evidence of Bronze Age activities and the artefacts found there are on show at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery; and in 2014, a hoard of Late Iron Age and Roman coins was found in the Kitchen Cave, the first time such a collection from these two separate civilisations has been found together; and buried within a cave. The Roman coins predate the Roman invasion of Britain and are thought to have belonged to a member of the Corieltauvi tribe, although this area was not part of their usual territory. The caves can be reached from the path alongside the river, but the route to openings becomes very steep: wear appropriate footwear and take care when ascending. There is an appealing view of Dovedale when the cave mouth is reached. https://thecaptainsguides.com/reynards-cave-dovedale/

Dove Holes are shallow and easy to access and explore from the path. They were formed during the 2 ice ages by glacial water erosion, the caves became dry as the water cut deeper into the gorge (Dovedale Wikipedia). According to 'Lets Go PeakDistrict' These caves have seen human inhabitation since 13,000BC, when the first Upper Paleolithic hunters used them for shelter. In more recent history, there is evidence that Neolithic farmers used the caves as tombs about 4,500 years ago. Some of the items found from within the caves are displayed in Buxton Museum.

Wolfscote Dale is an attractive limestone dale. It's quieter than Dovedale but just as attractive. The caves in the limestone at the start of our walk in Wolfscote Dale could at one time been the home of one of the many wolves that are reputed to have lived in the dale.
