This is the start point of the Glyndŵr's Way National Trail which winds through mid-Wales and ends at Welshpool. It's not as popular a trail as Offa's Dyke which is the main reason you'll meet other hikers here in Knighton.

The poet A.E. Housman described Clun, Clunton and Clunbury as being the quietest places under the sun and it still is. Standing beneath the Norman castle, the township has attracted famous writers such as Chatwin, Forster and Osborne. Time to reflect on the walk as you are nearly there now, time for a well earned drink.

There's a railway station at Bucknell about 3 minutes walk past the Sitwell Arms pub, and the Celtic X48 bus calls at the station too(timetable is valid until December 2025) There's also the 738/740 Minsterley Motors bus to and from Knighton/Ludlow via Leintwardine with a very helpful regular driver.

Hopton Castle, located in Shropshire, is a historic fortification that dates back to the 12th century. This medieval castle played a significant role in the English Civil War and was the site of a famous siege in 1644. The castle is surrounded by beautiful countryside making it a great location for a stroll or picnic.

Knighton is a beautiful border market town and is unique in being the only town to sit astride Offa's Dyke national footpath. It is also notable as the starting point of Glyndwr's Way, following the route of the Welsh leader's significant battles. It is also a mecca for border cyclists and there are plenty of routes to navigate the surrounding hills and stunning countryside.

Nice bridge across the stream in Clun. There is a good cafe on one side to stop and refuel.

Norman Castle that is now an impressive ruin. Run by English Heritage and a fine place to explore.

Hopton Castle refers to a village and a castle of the same name, hidden in the rolling Shropshire countryside between Craven Arms and Knighton. The castle itself has been a ruin since the 18th century, and is a wonderfully atmospheric place to wander around. Grade I listed, it's looked after by the Hopton Castle Preservation Trust, which has overseen recent restoration work and an appearance on Time Team in 2010.

Sun Inn is well worth a visit as its one of Englands last parlour pubs. In new ownership with new bar, but the original parlour and bar are still there.

Leintwardine is a pretty village in Herefordshire, on the border with Wales. The village has a rich history that stretches back to Roman times and retains many beautiful buildings. The River Teme flows through the village and is a popular wild swim and paddling spot. The Church of St Mary Magdalene dates to the 12th century and is Grade I-listed. We stopped at The George for food and drink and were thoroughly impressed.

Great place for Coffee, Cakes and so many great books to browse through

Close to the Welsh and Shropshire borders, at the meeting of the Rivers Teme and Clun, is the large Roman-origin village of Leintwardine. It is a great base for some serene and gorgeous walks in the rolling Herefordshire countryside. There's excellent food and comfortable rooms at the Lion, whilst the Sun Inn is a traditional parlour pub that also serves great food.
