Lovely little old church and an even better hedge!

A little place with a lot of history, and a spectacular hedge!

This is the start point of the Glyndŵr's Way National Trail which winds through mid-Wales and ends at Welshpool. It's not as popular a trail as Offa's Dyke which is the main reason you'll meet other hikers here in Knighton.

The poet A.E. Housman described Clun, Clunton and Clunbury as being the quietest places under the sun and it still is. Standing beneath the Norman castle, the township has attracted famous writers such as Chatwin, Forster and Osborne. Time to reflect on the walk as you are nearly there now, time for a well earned drink.

Knighton is a beautiful border market town and is unique in being the only town to sit astride Offa's Dyke national footpath. It is also notable as the starting point of Glyndwr's Way, following the route of the Welsh leader's significant battles. It is also a mecca for border cyclists and there are plenty of routes to navigate the surrounding hills and stunning countryside.

Nice village and large enough to have a shop, a cafe and even a pizzeria (pizzas Fri & Sat 5-8pm only).

Ridiculously pretty chocolate-box village. A pleasure to ride through. Also has a tea room.

Also a florist, if you need an emergency corsage 💐. Lovely coffee and great cakes, tray bakes & croissant as well. Bar seating just inside if the weather isn’t great or outdoor tables for the summer.

Nice bridge across the stream in Clun. There is a good cafe on one side to stop and refuel.

Dunkertons organic cider mill Pembridge shop. Situated in an old Tudor style barn.

Aardvark Books is a great new and second hand bookshop with a nice café and safe outside seating. Open 10:00 - 16:00 but closed on Mondays.

Lingen village is in the north-western area of Herefordshire, close to the boarder with Wales. Included in the Domesday Book in 1086 the village was mostly concerned with farming until very recently. There is the remains of a Motte and Bailey castle a little north of the village.

Eardisland is a pretty village in Herefordshire. There are good examples of Tudor black and white half timber houses.

Pembridge village in northern Herefordshire is noted for it's historic black and white timber framed buildings. These where mostly built in the 14th century but many have been extended or renovated more recently.

A little village that lies close to the boarder of Wales in the NW corner of Herefordshire. There is a castle but rarely open (scarecrow Sunday). It also has 16 building/ monuments that are listed on the National Heritage List. The white thatch cottages on the green, probably C17 to early C18. And the drinking fountain, mid C19. Cast iron. Fluted column with iron mask to front. It no longer works! Are just 2 of the 16. A remarkable lumpy free-form yew hedge dominates the village. At approximately half a mile in length is reputed to be the longest free-form or cloud yew hedge in England. Saving the best till last if it’s fresh coffee and homemade cake you like then don’t miss Aardvark Books. Closed on a Monday otherwise open from 10:00-16:00.
