The original Severn Road Bridge was completed in 1966 and replaced the old ferry. It's a suspension bridge with a span of 3,240 ft (988 m). Originally it carried the M4, but after the new bridge was completed it changed to the M48. The Severn Road Bridge has wide pavements on either side, separated by barriers from the carriageway. It's noisy, but it's also quite fun to walk or ride across.

This is part of the Sustrans cycle network but is in fact a major A road with cars travelling at high speed. Some drivers are as surprised as you are that you’re there and can pass very close. Brace yourself!

Brandy Bottom Colliery, located just off the Bath-Bristol cycle path, was an important coal mining site in the 19th century, particularly known for its deep mine workings. The site features remnants of the colliery, including old structures and spoil heaps. It operated during a time of significant coal production in the area before eventually closing. Today, it serves as a historical point of interest along the cycling route, illustrating the region's industrial heritage

Cycling over the Severn Bridge is a scenic and memorable experience, with the bridge crossing the Severn Estuary and connecting South Gloucestershire in England to Monmouthshire in Wales. It's part of the National Cycle Route 4, and cyclists are permitted to use the footpath/cycleway located on the northern side of the bridge. It opened in 1966 and replaced earlier ferry services. It was a key engineering feat of its time, featuring a suspension design, and remained the primary crossing until the opening of the Second Severn Crossing in 1996.

Beautiful stretch of quiet road between Chipping Sodbury and the hamlet of Horton. There is a lovely open stretch of road there with no hedges, so you can get an open countryside feel. Overall, it is a great scenic ride to Horton on a pretty quiet road.

Perfect place for a mid ride treat!

Some amazing street art, by some very talented artisits on the walls of the Severn Bridge underpass.

Pretty firm in summer, drains well in the spring/autumn. Can be a bit of a mudbath in winter. I've done it on a road bike many times but I would recommend 30mm tyres and above.

Opened in 1918 the signal box controlled the level crossing here. The railways closed between 1966 and 1968 but a local chap rented the box and thus stopped it being destroyed. It's now a grade 2 listed building and was restored by the council. Today the friends of the area look after the box, cafe and community garden.

A luxurious house for ducks!

Erected in 1859, the Three Shires Stones mark the point where Somerset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire meet. Although the marking is pretty impressive, it's nestled at the side of the main road, part of the Fosse Way, so it's easy to miss. It's said that the stones were once part of an ancient burial chamber.

Short and sweet with a really good surface... should hold up in winter.

This 100-ft (30m) high monument is a Grade II listed structure, built in 1846 to commemorate soldier and local MP Lord Robert Edward Somerset.

Tytherington Hill nature reserve and woodland covers a 7-hectare site to the northeast of Tytherington village. It's home to a variety of rich wildlife habitats, including broadleaved woodland, calcareous grassland and scrub, as well as shade-loving plants such as ferns. The site is set out on a steeply sloping escarpment with beautiful views over the surrounding countryside from the top.

The Somerset Monument was built in 1846 to commemorate Lord Robert Somerset. Lord Somerset was a soldier who fought in the Peninsular War and the War of the Seventh Coalition. he was also MP for Cirencester. It's a grade 2 listed building about 30m high with a viewing platform at the top.
