8월 27, 2025, Dragon's Back Ridge (Y Grib)
The Black Mountains are usually known for their broad flat ridges, but there are a couple of more narrow ridges leading up to the tops. The Dragons Back is one of them, climbed from Pengenffordd and the walk leads to Waun Fach, the second highest mountain in southern Britain. The ridge also includes Castell Dinas which was the highest castle in England and Wales at 450 m (1,476 feet)

7월 12, 2024, Pen y Gadair Fawr Summit Cairn
In terms of height, Pen y Gadair Fawr plays second fiddle only to Waun Fach as the Black Mountains' second highest summit. However, where Waun Fach's top is broad and relatively uninspiring, Pen y Gadair Fawr's is a little more like a peak in character. The summit is at a junction of paths: head east for Chwarel y Fan and the Mynydd Du Forest, venture south to Pen Twyn Mawr, or stride northeast to Waun Fach.

Great walk that's pretty accessible for most people to achieve, challenging but doable! The route I took incorporated Lord Hereford's Knob. I published it on Komoot here: https://www.komoot.com/tour/1576268965 And on my blog here (with extra commentary for my own entertainment!): https://weekendwalk.co.uk/route/hay-bluff-walk/

11월 17, 2023, Dragon's Back Ridge (Y Grib)
The Dragons Back walk starts in the small village of Pengenffordd within the Brecon Beacons National Park. The highest summit of this black mountain range that’s located in Southern Wales. Called Pen y Gadair Fawr or known as Waun Fach summit is that at a height of 811 metres it is the Second highest summit in the Southern of Britain!! Offering a fantastic 360 panoramic views of the surrounding country side and the beautiful Black Mountains. It’s Utterly mesmerising to witness! It’s like the Eyes can’t even begin to tell all of what they see! The first ascent of the walk takes you over the ups and downs of the ‘Dragons Back’, aptly named due to its shapely mounds that resemble a sleeping dragon. This area has grazing livestock and wild ponies roam the hills. Please keep ALL dogs on leads throughout this walk to ensure safety. Farmers do have the right to shoot any dogs that are not on a lead or under any kind of control!!! Be prepared for the serious repercussions farmers now have to take extreme measures to protect their livestock! It’s UNLAWFUL It’s totally Unacceptable behaviour from any specific species human or the four legged kind! It’s now become a real problem to the current local farmers! So unless you want your dog Shot keep it on a lead!!! TO MANY BRUTAL ATTACKS HAPPENING ON LOCAL CATTLE ARE GETTING ATTACKED AND KILLED BY WALKERS DOGS!

Hay Bluff is a prominent hill at the northern tip of the Black Mountains, an extensive upland massif which straddles the border between south-east Wales and England. The mountain sits at the point where the main northeast-facing escarpment of the Black Mountains meets the northwest facing escarpment, the next peak to the west being Twmpa. The flat summit of Hay Bluff which is marked by a beautiful welsh dragon trig pillar at a height of 677 metres (2,221 ft) overlooks the middle Wye Valley and the book town of Hay-on-Wye.

6월 29, 2023, Pen y Gadair Fawr Summit Cairn
Pen Y Gadair Fawr has a big cairn on its summit at 800m. It's a subsidiary peak of Waun Fach but probably offers better views standing at the head of the Grwyne Fechan valley. Normally run as part of the excellent Waun Fach horseshoe from either Llanbedr or Crickhowell.

Hay Bluff stands at 2,221 feet (677 m) at the northern end of a wonderfully runnable ridge. The Offa's Dyke path and the Llanthony horseshoe route both pass it. It's also a good, shorter loop from the Hay Bluff car park to the north, to include the excellent Cat's Back ridge if you have time. Great views to the north over Hay.

6월 27, 2023, Dragon's Back Ridge (Y Grib)
The long ridgeline from Pengenffordd and up over Y Grib is known as the Dragon's Back. This is because of the narrow rising and falling ridge which looks like a dragon. It's a great walk with excellent views.

12월 22, 2022, Twmpa (Lord Hereford's Knob)
Twmpa, also known as Lord Hereford’s Knob has a sweeping, wedge-shaped profile. It forms part of the awesome north eastern escarpment of the Black Mountains, just a couple of miles over the border from England and offers you a gorgeous (if at times boggy) ridge run. The quickest route up Twmpa ascends from the car parking at Gospel Pass. Just make sure you've warmed up as it's a challenging start for cold muscles!

10월 18, 2022, Merbach Hill Summit
Taking the footpath to the left (no cycling!) and walking for a few minutes you will reach the summit of Merbach Hill at a height of 318m. From the summit you can take in a vista of views. To the South East the meandering journey of the Wye can be followed with the Malvern's in the background. To the west the imposing Welsh Black Mountains fill the landscape, with Hay Bluff taking centre stage.

Merbach Hill, at 1,043 feet (318 m), is a glorious place to survey Herefordshire’s landscape of patchwork farmland and rolling hills. This is an easy hill walk that rewards with superb views. In the distant east rise the Malverns, whilst the River Wye's wildly meandering course is seen beautifully. Wales' Black Mountains are the panorama's most dramatic aspect, particularly the prominent Hay Bluff.

11월 13, 2020, Hay Bluff
This is a beautiful area and is popular with hikers, paracenders, bikers and the general population at large. There is a narrow single track road, with ample passing places, that passes over the common below Hay Bluff and it goes onto the famed viewpoint of the Gospel Pass. There's the main car park below the Bluff but there's also ample parking off the road in dry weather too. Super place for family picnics and walks.
