The only remaining mediaeval fortified bridge in Great Britain

This 13th century Norman Castle is set in a beautiful riverside location. It's managed by the National Trust and has free parking and free entry. It's also a good starting point for exploring the area.

St Bartholomew’s sits in a picturesque churchyard on the banks of the River Dore. The oldest parts of the building are Norman, including a round-headed slit window in the south wall and the font bowl. The church was extended in the 14th century and reconsecrated in 1348. The unusual 3-light windows are of a style peculiar to Herefordshire. An early two bowl piscina is in the sanctuary.

It’s fine to swim at Tregate Bridge; would recommend upstream from the bridge, then float back down!

It's very pretty and looks like a fab spot for a swim but it's all barbed wire and nettles and "Private Fishing" despite no fishermen.

Skenfrith is a Norman castle redeveloped by a later owner in 1219. It's a National Trust property with free entry.

Once an important border castle, and birthplace of Henry V of England. In 1647 the site was reused and built over by Great Castle House, which has since become the headquarters and regimental museum of the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers.

Bring an inflatable for a lazy float downriver or just go for a cooling dip.

On the other side of the ruins of Skenfrith Castle you'll find shady, sandy spots where you can easily wade into the River Monnow for a swim. Busy with children in summer, but there are wonderful deeper pools in the river that are well worth a dip in any season. You can also picnic and sunbathe on the swathe of grass to the left.

The bridge crossing the River Monnow is the only surviving medieval fortified river bridge in Britain where the gate tower stands on the bridge.

Grosmont is a one of the "Three Castles of Gwent" a trio of strongholds (also including Skenfrith and White Castle). The original earth-and-timber stronghold was built on a "gros mont" (French for ‘big hill’) and later replaced in stone. Access is free, year round.
