This 13th century Norman Castle is set in a beautiful riverside location. It's managed by the National Trust and has free parking and free entry. It's also a good starting point for exploring the area.

The Kymin is an 18th-century round house and naval temple on a prominent hill, set within 9 acres (4 ha) of grounds. It's a fair slog from Monmouth but you are rewarded with wonderful views over the Wye Valley and the town below as you climb. Once you reach the top, the views are breathtaking and there are benches to stop and soak it all in. Absolute bliss. The site is owned by the National Trust.

A temple that was inspired by Britain’s naval supremacy at the height of the British Empire and built in 1800. This was inspired by Nelson's victory in the Battle of the Nile in 1798. Nelson came to see it in 1802 with Lady Hamilton and her husband Sir William. That must have been an interesting weekend!

The 300-year old Shire Hall, on Agincourt Square in the centre of Monmouth, has outside a large sculpture of King Henry V (also called Henry of Monmouth) and a statue of the aviation pioneer Charles Rolls who lived near Monmouth. Rolls also co-founded the Rolls-Royce car manufacturing firm.

Skenfrith is a Norman castle redeveloped by a later owner in 1219. It's a National Trust property with free entry.

Grosmont is a one of the "Three Castles of Gwent" a trio of strongholds (also including Skenfrith and White Castle). The original earth-and-timber stronghold was built on a "gros mont" (French for ‘big hill’) and later replaced in stone. Access is free, year round.

Nestled in the lower reaches of the scenic Wye Valley is the historic county town of Monmouthshire. It is a popular choice as a base for exploring all the superb landscape has to offer. Notable landmarks in the town include its medieval stone gated bridge, the last of its kind left in Britain, and Monmouth Castle, the birthplace of King Henry V in 1386.

Below the gentle slopes of the surrounding hills, Kentchurch is a lovely village by the River Monnow in Herefordshire. According to some, it was the home of the legendary Jack o' Kent, a popular bogeyman figure in Herefordshire and Monmouthshire folklore. The Bridge Inn does excellent food. The historic Kentchurch Court is a Grade I-listed building that dates back to the 14th century. It has seen many revamps, not least in the late 18th century when it was given a gothic remodelling by John Nash.

The Kymin, (Welsh: Cae-y-Maen),[1] is a hill overlooking Monmouth, in Monmouthshire, Wales. It is located approximately one mile east of Monmouth, on the eastern side of the River Wye and adjacent to the border with the Forest of Dean and England. The summit of the hill, about 800 feet above sea level, is known for its neo-classical monuments, the Roundhouse and the Naval Temple, built between 1794 and 1800. The site is within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and is owned by the National Trust.
