Machynlleth is a very popular, pretty and historic market town at the head of the beautiful Dyfi estuary. It is a mecca for its never ending supply of bike trails. It is also an ideal base for exploring the neighbouring countryside. The Dyfi Valley, Snowdonia National Park, Tal-y-Llyn Railway, Clywedog Reservoir, the Vale of Rheidol Railway and Devil's Bridge gorge are all within easy reach of Machynlleth.

A prominent landmark in the centre of Machynlleth, the Clock Tower was built in 1874 to mark the coming of age of the eldest son of the Fifth Marquess of Londonderry. It marks the southern termination of the Snowdonia Way long-distance trail. For supplies, there are plenty of places to stock up in the town.

Tarren Hendre's grassy summit is the southernmost 2,000-foot (610 m) peak in Snowdonia. This position gives it unique views into mid Wales towards Plylimon and north towards the great mass of Cadair Idris. It's also the first summit visited on the Snowdonia Way Mountain Route.

My favourite descent of the whole Trans Cambrian route. We did it in June, during a very dry spell. It was epic fun, with huge pink flowers all the way down, wonderful trees and the babbling river topping off the whole sensory experience. Heaven.

Tarrenhendre at 633m is one of the tops in the Cadair Idris mountain group. It's a big grassy summit with a steeper top and a cairn. It's a good run partly due to its loneliness, you probably won't see anyone and you can have a proper wild adventure!

Great climbing road through amazing valley, mind the occasional car and livestock.

Busy town with an 'alternative' feel to it. We arrived at about lunchtime on a market day with stalls lining the high street. Lots of cafes with different styles to choose from. Great place to stop for lunch before we embarked on the long climb south.

This clock is a landmark in the centre of Machynlleth. It was built by the residents of Machynlleth to celebrate the coming of age of the eldest son of the Fifth Marquess of Londonderry, who lived at Y Plas.

Great place for a cafe stop either before or after a session off road in the hills

Lovely run down through the golf course in to Machynlleth. Especially after hours spent off road in the mountains.

This main road out of Machynlleth heading south into the hills takes you past the golf course on your way to Forge, and is a gorgeous strip of tarmac, albeit a bit of a climb! If you're heading into the town from the south, it's a reassuring sight as you near civilisation again after the remote 'Desert of Wales'.

From east to west, this is a marvellous rocky, loose descent through the forest alongside the Llynfnant, that features both on the Mach 1 XC loop and the multi-day Trans Cambrian Way. With dappled light through the trees in strong sunlight and some small roots and ruts to navigate, it's an absolute blast on gravel bikes and mountain bikes alike, and goes on much longer than you'd expect!

The Machynlleth Town Clock rises imperiously from the centre of the town, looking almost out of place in its grandiosity. It was erected in the late 1800s and the design was chosen from a competition inviting ideas. It was built to celebrate the 21st birthday of the Fifth Marquess of Londonderry’s son although the construction suffered delays. An important part of this lovely town, the clock tower underwent significant repairs in 2009, using lottery and council money, as well as considerable funds from the town’s residents.

This serene lane offers a fantastic, tarmac-surfaced ride through Happy Valley alongside Afon Dyffryn-gwyn. This entire segment is a climb but it’s fairly steady and gentle, with stunning views of the hills and mountains on either side. A mixture of woodlands, farmland and open hillsides make for rather bucolic landscapes. While not traffic-free, there’s very little traffic on this road as it mainly serves farms with a more major road running parallel to the south.
