Cawfields Quarry is a former quarry located directly on Hadrian's Wall near Haltwhistle. Constructed in the early 20th century, the quarry cut through the Roman wall, exposing the underlying dolerite rock of the Whin Sill. This geological formation formed a natural defensive line upon which the Romans built their wall. Following the quarry's closure, the site has been redeveloped into a peaceful recreation area with a picturesque lake, picnic areas, and walking trails. The area offers direct access to Milecastle 42.

Freya’s Cabin is an enchanting wooden structure along the Lakeside Way, designed by Studio Weave in 2009 as part of Kielder’s Art & Architecture program. Constructed from 200 pressed wood panels, the cabin creates a fairytale-like forest, with integrated seating and a facade clad in shimmering gold metal—Freya’s “tears of gold.” The structure tells the fictional story of Freya and Robin, two lovers on opposite sides of the lake, trying to connect with each other through their architectural gifts. Facing Robin’s Hut, Freya’s Cabin invites cyclists and walkers to experience tranquility, wonder, and a touch of romance.

Once known as Hartley Haven, the village was renamed in the 17th century after the construction of a pier and sluice, designed to facilitate the movement of ships in the port. There are numerous pubs and cafés overlooking the harbour where you can rest tired legs.

Burnhope Reservoir is a popular spot for hikers and dog walkers. It's a nice scenic spot with a variety of walks on either side of the reservoir, and there are parking spots at both ends of the dam. There are lovely rest spots with benches on the north side; I don't know regarding the southern side.

Cow Green Reservoir is a three-kilometre long reservoir set in the heart of the North Pennines. It is set in a beautiful, wide valley under the shadow of Meldon Fell. There is a large car park with porta loos nearby that provides the only parking in the area for the myriad of outdoor activities, including hiking, in the area. Cauldron Snout, a famous waterfall, is also nearby, located on the other side of the dam.

Cow Green reservoir is 3km long and was completed in 1971 to supply water to Teesside. It controls the flow in the river Tees keeping the supply to industry downstream safe during dry periods. The area surrounding the reservoir is an important habitat for rare alpine plants.

Here, you are afforded a fantastic view over the serene Harbottle Lake. Please be aware, though, the bog surrounding the lake is dangerous with very deep water underneath it, so make sure you do not stray from the footpath.

45 years ago, this site was a working quarry, where the hard whinstone was blasted with dynamite to provide road stone for the expanding road network of the early 20th Century. After it closed in 1976, the quarry was filled in and landscaped, planted with trees and flowers, and today is a haven for wildlife and nature. Now it is a place to relax, watch wildlife and feed the ducks, but you can also find adventure in its meadows and woodlands and get a real taste of the wild!

As well as the wonderful wildlife and coastline, Seahouses is known for its seafaring traditions and history. In particular it is famed for its iconic Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) figure Grace Darling. She and her father took a rowing boat out to sea from Seahouses in 1838 and managed to save many people after the Forfarshire fishing boat crashed into rocks. An RNLI lifeboat at Seahouses bears the name Grace Darling in her honour.

This colourful fishing village has a bustling harbour, a number of shops, some of the best ‘takeaway’ fish and chips in Northumberland and plenty of ways to see the local wildlife. A huge attraction to Seahouses is its boat trips to The Farne Islands, where you can see puffins during spring and summer, grey seal colonies and an array of other wildlife throughout the year. Seahouses is also a fantastic base for exploring Northumberland's coastline. You can see Bamburgh Castle in the distance while you are exploring this bustling village, as well as views of Holy Island and Lindisfarne Castle a little further in the distance. Roam the beaches for the best views, taking your newly-purchased fishing nets, buckets and spades to go rock pooling. You can go body boarding in the sea and explore the sand dunes.

This is a beautiful spot in an old quarry and the start for many a good walk. There are nice views of the quarry and nearby parts of Hadrians Wall. It is also a perfect place for picnics and has good facilities too.
