The urban area of Maderuelo has been declared a site of cultural interest due to its magnificent state of conservation. San Esteban de Gormaz was called Castromoro in the 9th century. Its location on the banks of the Duero has given it great historical and strategic importance over the centuries. This river was the natural border between the Muslim and Christian kingdoms. In 1187 the first courts of Castile were held here.
