6월 26, 2024, Bicigrino Statue
“Bicigrino” is a term used on the Camino de Santiago and is a combination of the Spanish words “bici”, meaning bicycle, and “peregrino”, meaning pilgrim1. A Bicigrino is therefore a pilgrim who covers the Camino de Santiago by bicycle21. To receive a Compostela certificate, a Bicigrino must complete at least the last 200 km of a Camino route, ending in Santiago de Compostela. It is a trend that has developed in recent years, with more and more pilgrims choosing to do the Camino de Santiago by bicycle. It's a great way to experience the beautiful landscapes and historic sites along the Camino. 😊

The set formed by the monasteries of Suso (upper) and Yuso (lower) was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1997. Its value lies not only in its architectural heritage, with its Gothic cloister or royal sarcophagi, but in its cultural heritage by housing the codex where a monk wrote the first words in Spanish. The first monastery dates from the 11th century, but the complex and the entire town have evolved over the centuries to reach the splendor and atmosphere that they offer today.

This monastery, whose construction began in the 12th century, is the first female Cistercian community to settle in the Iberian Peninsula. The complex was not completed until the 20th century itself, when the rooms where the nuns live today were built. Its architectural evolution gives it traces of Romanesque, Gothic and Neoclassical styles that make it a very unique complex. It is located a short distance from San Millán de la Cogolla and framed in what is now known as the route of the monasteries in La Rioja.
