The history of Salamanca's Roman bridge is intertwined with that of the city itself, and it has been one of its defining features for centuries. Located in a position that facilitated human settlement and the development of economic activity, its proximity to the three hills and the Tormes River made it a strategic location. It is a solid bridge, resistant to the passage of time. For centuries it served as the main access point to the city, until a new bridge was completed over the Tormes River in 1913, allowing the passage of vehicles.

The fact that a place on the Iberian Peninsula is included in the list of the three most famous pilgrimage destinations in the Christian world – along with Jerusalem and Rome – is thanks to one of Jesus' apostles, who is said to have preached here. After his martyrdom, which is briefly reported in the Acts of the Apostles, his body miraculously found its final resting place here: Saint James the Greater. A small local sanctuary was initially built over his grave; later, a city developed that even bears his name (Santiago de Compostela), and the church in his honor became a cathedral, i.e., a bishop's church. According to national legend, Saint James also played a key role in the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula from the Moors and is the patron saint of Spain.

The Roman Bridge, or Puente Romano. This magnificent granite structure with 26 arches crosses the Tormes River. The 15 arches on the city side are of Roman origin, while the rest date from the 18th century, when a restoration took place. It is such a great symbol for Salamanca that it is included in the city's coat of arms.

The Cathedral of Salamanca is a unique cathedral complex in Spain, as it has two cathedrals built in different periods and styles: the Old Cathedral and the New Cathedral. Old Cathedral: Dedicated to Santa María de la Sede, it is in a transitional Romanesque style and began to be built in the first half of the 12th century. Its dome, known as the Torre del Gallo, is one of the most notable elements. New Cathedral: Built between the 16th and 18th centuries, it mixes late Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. It is the highest cathedral in Spain, 110 meters high. The idea of building a new cathedral arose due to the city's increasing population and the need for a larger space for worship. Both cathedrals have been declared World Heritage Sites and are a fundamental part of the city of Salamanca1. If you want to visit them and learn more about their history, art and worship, you can do so through cultural visits that include state-of-the-art audio guides in several languages1. I hope you enjoy your visit to this impressive cathedral complex! 🏰✨
