Almendralejo, located in the province of Badajoz, Extremadura, is a city with a rich historical, cultural, and agricultural heritage. Founded after the Reconquista, around the 13th century, by the Order of Santiago. Its name comes from the almond trees that once covered the original site. By the 16th century, it already had a well-established urban structure. In 1513, it received its charter of privileges, which spurred its development.

The Torremejía Way is a stage of the Camino de la Plata, also known as the Silver Route, which joins the Mozarabic Way in Mérida. The stage from Torremejía to Mérida is relatively short, about 15.3 km. This section is known for its rural landscapes and the tranquility it offers pilgrims.

This small town for many years was nothing more than a few families living in the area. However, it began to grow in the 1850s and had more than 1,700 residents by 1920. Currently, there are a little more than 1,200 residents who work mainly in the area's agriculture, which is grapes and olive trees. This means that the area around the town is full of fields and trails that are nice to explore.

With the Palacio de Lastra as one of the most important elements of the center and where the Camino de Santiago runs through it, heading south. There is always an area to grab something or find some shade.

From Torremejía and which comes from the city of Mérida, the Camino de Santiago appears that goes in a southerly direction, towards Villafranca de los Barros. Surrounded by agricultural fields and large esplanades.

A small rural town Villalba de los Barros has an impressive medieval heritage. The Villalba castle is the most significant monument with its imposing quadrangular towers dominating the center of the town.

Walking through the Aceuchal area, don't miss the imposing San Pedro Apóstol Parish with its tall bell tower. It is a good place in the center of town to stop to rest or have something to eat or drink.

Built on the bed of the Guadajira River and near the town of Villalba de los Barros, the dam gives us precious views as we meander along the shore. Pastures grow in the surroundings that are used by the sheep farms present in the area. On the horizon of the swamp you can see the castle of Feria.
