The Sierra de María is located within the María-Los Vélez Natural Park, a protected natural area located near Vélez Rubio, Vélez Blanco, María, and Chirivel. It was officially recognized as such in 1987. It covers an area of more than 22,500 hectares and has a visitor information office in the town of Vélez Blanco. Its unique variety of interior microclimates also contributes to the proliferation of many different plant species. The abundant forest cover gives rise to the development of native Black and Corsican pine forests, which coexist with Aleppo pine as a result of various reforestation projects.

The ruined castle, built on a small hill near the Corneros River, has an irregular plan and from the castle you can see the castles of Tirieza, Puentes, Vélez Rubio and Vélez Blanco.

From this track there are good views of La Muela and the castle of Vélez-Blanco. The agricultural landscape sits at the bottom of the valley, while the lush slopes of pine trees rule the higher elevations.

From the other side of the Rambla de Nogalte, we are surprised by a fortification on top of a hill. It is the Castillo de Nogalte, a fortress from the Islamic medieval era, located in the old town of Puerto Lumbreras and built during the 13th century.

The path that runs near Collado de los Pintores offers a beautiful view of the peaks of Muela Grande (1,552 m.) and Piedra del Mediodía (1,502 m.), in the Sierra de María-Los Vélez.

From the other side of the Rambla de Nogalte, we are surprised by a fortification on top of a hill. It is the Castillo de Nogalte, a fortress from the Islamic medieval era, located in the old town of Puerto Lumbreras and built during the 13th century.

We crown one of the few ports that exceed 1000 meters in this area. From Huércal Overa it has a distance of 25.4km, it gains an altitude of 834m with an average slope of 3.2% and a maximum of 8%. From Puerto Lumbreras it is very similar; 30.0km of distance with an elevation of 731m, an average gradient of 2.1% and a maximum of 7.8%
