Time and again, the Way of St. James (Camino Frances) – as here on the stage from Torres del Rio to Logrono – involves crossing valleys and rivers. The bridges are sometimes comparatively modern, sometimes medieval, and sometimes even older. But always, and this is the main thing, they bring us – not only, of course, but also us pilgrims – safely to the other side.

From here you can see the ruins of the Mantible bridge, probably medieval (not Roman) that once connected El Cortijo with Assa. Only two arches remain standing, one of them recently rebuilt as it collapsed during the pandemic.

The stone bridge is one of the four bridges that cross the Ebro in Logroño. It is also called the bridge of San Juan de Ortega. The current structure was built in 1884 after the previous bridge collapsed in 1871. Rivers like the Ebro were a big challenge for pilgrims in the centuries before. That's why the Way of St. James always runs along traffic routes with bridges. The larger cities are always found where there are large bridges. The motorways and national roads now have their own paths. And that's a good thing.

Curious recently built hermitage that integrates a construction close to brutalism with some 15th century arches from a house in the nearby town of Alberite. From that place there are also some beautiful views.
