The horreo is a traditional structure typical especially in Galicia. It has the appearance of a small building that recalls a small temple, of an elongated rectangular shape that does not rest directly on the ground, but by means of pillars based on a stone or on foundations. The horreo, which etymologically derives from an almost identical Latin word, horreum, has essentially the function of a granary: it serves to conserve cereals (especially corn) protecting them from rodents.

The Escalinata and Capela das Neves is a historical monument located in Portomarín. The staircase is an imposing stone structure that is located right in front of the ugly bridge through which you cross the Miño River to reach Portomarín. It is part of the French route of the Camino de Santiago. At the top of the stairs is the Capela das Neves, a small chapel. This chapel is located on an arch of the old medieval bridge of the town. It is a place with a rich history and a spectacular arrival for pilgrims who travel the Camino de Santiago. I hope you enjoy exploring the Escalinata and Capela das Neves! 🚶♂️🏞️

Of Roman origin, it was founded in the year 25 BC. C. by Paulo Fabio Máximo and is the oldest in Galicia. Built near a fort, in Roman times it was called Lucus Augusti. Numerous Roman remains, many of them preserved in the Provincial Museum, are testimony to its early years of history, especially its Roman wall, unique in the world, which preserves its entire perimeter, and which was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000.
