The salt flats of Santa Pola are among the most important salt production areas on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Salt extraction has a long tradition here and is still carried out primarily through the evaporation of seawater in shallow basins under the influence of sun and wind. Besides their economic importance, the salt flats are also ecologically valuable: as a protected nature park, they provide habitat for numerous bird species and have a lasting impact on the region's landscape.

The N340 does not run through this area; there's surely a confusion about the locations. Many cyclists use this route towards La Marina - Santa Pola. Cycling on the N322 is permitted and possible. If you prefer, coming from Santa Pola, you can first cycle through the Parque Natural de les Salines towards the highlight "El Toro near Santa Pola" and only then reach the road. It's a short distance.

The Mata tower is located right between Mata beach and Ortigas beach. It's also an area with bars and restaurants.

The Santa Pola Salt Pans Natural Park is a significant natural park in the Valencian Community, encompassing the municipalities of Santa Pola and Elche (Baix Vinalopó). It was officially declared a natural park by the Valencian government on December 12, 1988, and is now one of the region's most important protected areas. The area is characterized by a diverse landscape: vast salt pans, freshwater lagoons, dunes, and coastal areas provide habitats for numerous animal and plant species. Of particular note is its importance for birdlife, including flamingos, black-winged stilts, redshanks, and various heron species, which regularly stop here to rest or breed. The combination of salt production, wetlands, and coastal landscapes makes the park an outstanding example of the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature. In addition, there is a visitor center and the Salt Museum, which offers insights into the history of salt production and the ecological significance of the park. With well-signposted paths, observation points and nature trails, the Parque Natural de las Salinas de Santa Pola is a popular destination for birdwatchers, hikers and nature lovers who want to experience the Mediterranean landscape in all its diversity.
