The castle was founded between 1260 and 1280 by the Markwartings. This family, from which several Bohemian noble families emerged, rose to prominence during the reign of King Otakar II Přemysl and owned extensive estates in the Jizera region up to the Giant Mountains. The first documented owner was Zdeněk (1280–1304), who named himself after the castle of Waldstein. He was the son of Jaroslav of Turnov (1234–1269). In addition to the castle, the Waldstein domain included several villages on both sides of the Jizera River, around Turnov, up to the Cistercian monastery of Hradiště. Even during Zdeněk's lifetime, disputes over ownership arose, which continued in subsequent generations. From 1318 onward, court proceedings between members of the Waldstein family for robbery in the associated villages are documented.

Hrubá Skála is a castle near the village of the same name in the Semily District of the Liberec Region. It stands on the eastern edge of the Hruboskalsko Nature Reserve in the Bohemian Paradise.

The U Lvíčka viewpoint is located in the Hrubá Skála rock town, near the Kapela viewpoint. The place was renovated to its current form in the 1990s and offers a view of the Kozákovský Ridge, the Devil's Hand, the rocks of the Maják and Kapelník areas. Together with the Kapela viewpoint, it is located on the so-called Golden Trail of the Bohemian Paradise, a red-marked hiking trail connecting the Hrubá Skála Chateau and the Wallenstein Castle. Due to its location, it is often sought after by tourists.

In the town of Hruboskalské mesto in the Bohemian Paradise, you can go to the U Lvíčka viewpoint. It is one of the most visited places in the sandstone area, which is very popular with tourists. An impressive insight into the interior of the rocks in the Hruboskalské region awaits you.

Kopic's estate (formerly Jiroš's estate) is a timbered homestead from the end of the 18th century, a cultural monument. It is (together with Dlask's estate) one of the most interesting examples of folk architecture of the Jizera region. The estate (Kacanovy no. 64) is located in a secluded area about 1 km east of the village of Kacanova in the Turnov region, in the Semily district. By the estate there is a statue of St. George and a ravine with a number of sandstone reliefs created by the owner Vojtěch Kopic.
