7월 3, 2024, Fountain in Plaza de España, Mérida
The square has its origins in the time of the Catholic Monarchs and has had two main functions throughout its history: commercial and festive. Fairs, bullfights, theater, masquerades and other events were held there. In the square, you will find several historic buildings, such as the Palacio de Los Mendoza, La Casa de Los Pacheco, El Círculo Emeritense, La Casa Consistorial, El Palacio de La China and the Co-Cathedral of Santa María. Additionally, in the center of the square, there is a 19th century neo-baroque marble fountain with putti mounted on dolphins. I hope you enjoy exploring the Plaza de España in Mérida! 😊

3월 27, 2024, Capitoline Wolf of Mérida
The Capitoline Wolf of Mérida is a replica of the one found in the Capitoline Museums in Rome. It was a gift from the Italian city to Mérida in 1997. This sculpture represents the founding of the Roman Empire and shows Romulus and Remus being breastfed by a wolf named Luperca. According to mythology, these two brothers were the ones who founded the city of Rome. The sculpture is located in a roundabout next to the door of the Arab Alcazaba, specifically in the Plaza de Roma, near the Roman Bridge.

The monument of the Roman she-wolf feeding Romulus and Remus, a symbol of ancient Rome, is located in the center of the roundabout, right next to the entrance to the Roman bridge. How could it be otherwise, in a city with so much Roman culture, the founding history of Rome had to be paid homage.

Very impressive historical building from Roman times in the middle of today's city center. Contemporary witness from another time. Popular photo motif, interesting to visit, definitely one of the must-sees in Merida.

10월 31, 2023, Temple of Diana (Mérida)
Here we come across the remains of a temple named after “DIANA”, who was best known in Roman mythology as the goddess of the hunt and the moon. However, this (alleged) dedication is by no means certain. Dating back to ancient pre-Christian times, the deities of Roman and Greek legends in particular have been preserved in the collective memory of people in Europe to this day. Throughout art history they have repeatedly been designed as motifs in paintings or as statues.

The temple was built with granite from local quarries and covered with stucco. It was surrounded by columns on all sides. These rest on a podium three meters high. While the temple was in use, its interior was accessed by climbing a monumental staircase, now lost. Since the 17th century, it has been popularly known as the Temple of Diana, although we currently know that it was consecrated to Rome and the Emperor.

Emerita Augusta was the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania and since then it has been the nerve center of Extremadura. Today it is the regional capital and the cradle of Roman heritage in southern Spain. Its archaeological and monumental complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attests to its importance for centuries. Emerita Augusta was planned as a version of the capital of the empire in Lusitania, in its Roman theater a classical theater festival is still held today. The Roman bridge over the Guadiana, with its 800 meters, is the longest in the Iberian Peninsula. Mérida also has other Roman monuments such as the temple of Diana or the aqueduct. Its Arab citadel was also one of the bastions of the Muslim kingdom of Al-Andalus.

This city exudes so much Roman flair. We were lucky and came in the middle of the "Emerita X LUDICA" festival, many citizens had dressed up as Romans, Roman soldiers, slave traders and traders were everywhere. 25 BC This city was founded under the name EMERITA Augusta as a settlement for the veterans of the V and X Legions. With 50000 inhabitants it was the largest and most influential city in Iberia. The 800m long PUENTE ROMANO with 60 arches was built in 25 BC and was one of the largest bridges in the entire Roman Empire. The city had three huge theaters: Teatro Romano (here you can still imagine how impressive the games were against this backdrop), the Anfittheater Romano could hold up to 6000 spectators (it could even be flooded for the representation of naval battles ) and the Hippodromo Romano, one of the largest racecourses in the empire. The many magnificent mosaic floors and the finely carved marble statues are impressive. A slave market was held at the Templo de Diana this weekend. When we drove on after this weekend - and one should already spend two days in Merida - the backdrop of the huge Acueducto de los Milagros (Miracle Aqueduct) said goodbye to us. The cool water from the Proserpina dam reached Merida via this waterway. We will also pass this dam and admire the dam wall constructed by the Romans.

A real highlight - especially the arrival in the city of Mérida after crossing the bridge. Because "The Puente Romano (Spanish for Roman Bridge) in the southern Spanish city of Mérida is considered the longest surviving bridge from antiquity. In Roman times, the building spanned the Guadiana to 62 arches with a total length of 755 m. Today, the bridge is 721 m long (including the bridge entrances: 792 m) and rests on 60 arches, three of which are hidden in the embankment. "(Wikipedia)
