11월 19, 2024, Alicún de las Torres Thermal Springs
Hydrogeological studies show that the thermal waters of Alicún de las Torres come mainly from the carbonate aquifer of the Sierra de Baza and, to a lesser extent, from the waters of the Mencal aquifer. Scientists estimate that the aquifer is located at a depth of at least 650 to 800 meters.

The Troil Canal. According to scientists, they date back at least 3600 years ago. Due to the precipitation of calcium carbonate, these canals grew and continuously formed these amazing walls (some of them are 4 meters wide at the base, less than a meter wide at the top, 15 meters high and reach a length of almost 750 meters

The Acequia del Toril is a porous limestone aqueduct, more than 1.5 km long and more than 10 meters high at some points. Its natural construction over millennia has been used since prehistoric times to supply a settlement from one of the eight nearby hot springs. This meandering geological formation, with walls up to three meters thick, remains an impressive testament to natural engineering and human use of water.

A very interesting natural phenomenon that goes back to the first humans and beyond. An old calcareous water source that has been building itself for many thousands of years to the wall it has become today. At the top, the water still flows abundantly through the source. The water is still clearly visible on the road side, as the surrounding ground is even higher.

Beautiful trail in the Gorafe desert with fantastic views of the shapes eroded over the centuries by the effect of water and wind on the clayey soil.

Beautiful area of clayey soil located in Gorafe. It receives the name of Los Coloraos due to the color of the geological formations. Sunrise and sunset are especially ideal to enjoy this natural wonder in all its splendor.

Spectacular natural travertine wall that formed over millennia a wall that is also a natural water channel. Already from the first human populations it was used and reaches a distance of 1.5 km. If you arrive by bicycle, you will have to walk a bit to see this natural spectacle.

The track goes down the desolate Loma de las Yeguas and enters the Los Coloraos desert, the environmental heart of the Gorafe desert steppes. The name is due to the ocher, yellow and reddish color of the clay soils that build the reliefs of the unique landscape, used in countless locations for movies and television commercials. The trail deviates from the main route to visit a group of more spectacular clay towers and continues through colored gullies.

Not suitable for children. Not suitable for summer. Bring enough water and food for a day. There is no where to buy or sources in the whole route. There are also no shadows of vegetation, only the shadow of some nook in the terrain. On the other hand, the desert landscapes are worth the visit.

Los Coloraos is best experienced in early morning or late evening when golden light enhances the colour of the canyon walls into beautiful hues of red, magenta and orange. This is also an amazing location to cook dinner/breakfast and view sunset/sunrise.

The Fountain trail is an offshoot to a a tiny spring. Be aware that this trail is a dead end, and that it’s likely that there will not be drinkable water when you arrive. When we were there in mid April it was a mud hole teeming with frogs and frogspawn.

In this lovely canyon, keep your eyes onto the ground. This trail is littered with stunning fossilised minerals. Please: Enjoy searching for them and take your photos but please do not collect and take them home. It is forbidden.
