11월 21, 2023, Pozuel del Campo
Pozuel del Campo is a small town in the province of Teruel, a few kilometers from the border with Castilla-La Mancha. A castle once stood here, but today there are no vestiges of this construction, only scant remains of the wall. In any case, it is a pleasant stop to refill your bottles at the public fountain on the way between Monreal and Molina de Aragón.

A city of transit since ancient times, Calamocha stands in the middle of the extensive plain of the Jiloca, on the right bank of the river. Its excellent geographical situation led to its being an important fortified enclave in the past. In fact, it was the city of El Cid passing through on his way to Valencian lands.

Located on the banks of the Jiloca River, the town of Calamocha has an interesting history and places of interest that are worth visiting, such as the Roman bridge over the river. It knew how to be part of the Albarracín taifa until King Alfonso I conquered these territories in the 12th century.

Population that is in the old middle of the Jiloca river, where it then descends towards the population of Teruel. The depression of the Jiloca river is a valley in the old middle of the Iberian System.

It is believed that Monreal del Campo was founded in the 12th century by order of King Alfonso I, after he had reconquered the territory after the Battle of Cutanda. Alfonso I ordered the construction of a castle, although today hardly any remains remain. In the town there is a saffron museum, as well as several restaurants and shops.

The town of Calamocha, in the province of Teruel, is located on the right bank of the Jiloca River. Formerly, it was part of the Albarracín taifa until the 12th century when King Alfonso I reconquered this territory. It is worth going to the river and enjoying the recreational areas on the banks, as well as admiring the beautiful bridge of, possibly, Roman origin.

From El Poyo del Cid you have an excellent view over the Jiloca Valley. The Castilian knight El Cid had set up camp here during his forays during the Reconquista - hence the name of the place. A statue was erected in his honor at the end of the town.

At this point, I began to roughly follow “La Ruta del Cid” – a route that’s named after a 10th Century Castillian warlord that traveled through Spain conquering towns. Nowadays, the route is a way to promote tourism – it passes through several historical villages and has signs indicating where to go. It was great to follow on a bicycle – the roads were paved, free of cars and every 5 km I would pass through another cute little village. It was like going back in time.
