Balones is a tiny mountain village tucked between the Serrella and Sierra de Almudaina, at around 620 metres above sea level in the El Comtat region of Alicante. With fewer than 150 residents, it sits quietly in a small valley, surrounded by almond orchards, dry terraces and gently rolling hills. The village itself is compact and understated — a few streets, a church tower, and a sense that not much has changed here in decades. For cyclists, Balones is a valuable link between remote mountain villages like Fageca, Quatretondeta and Benimassot, and the lower routes leading to Gorga, Penàguila or Benilloba. It often appears mid-ride on quiet inland loops, offering a brief pause between longer climbs. The approach to Balones from either direction is calm and scenic. From the east, the road rolls gently through the landscape, with soft climbs and panoramic views of inland Alicante. From the west, the ride is slightly more enclosed, flanked by slopes of scrubland and scattered pine trees. The village itself doesn’t offer cafés or shops, but it has a public fountain and a shaded plaza that invites you to slow down for a moment. You’re unlikely to see more than a handful of people — just the stillness of rural life, the ringing of a church bell, or the distant bark of a dog. Balones isn’t a destination — it’s a passage, and that’s exactly what gives it its charm. A place that quietly connects landscapes, rhythms and moments of reflection deep in the heart of the Costa Blanca’s hidden interior.

A must-visit café with one of the best terraces in the region – overlooking the legendary Coll de Rates. Blanca Bikes serves great coffee and snacks, but it’s the atmosphere that makes it special. Think après-ski vibes, but with sun, lycra and carbon bikes instead of snow and skis. Perfect for watching riders roll in and out all day long. 📍 Located right on the route to/from Coll de Rates – you can’t miss it.

In Gorga you have a little playground where you can also refill your bidon

This is a great segment. If descending you can keep pushing on the pedals the whole way and don't need to touch your brakes. If ascending from Benigembla this is a very gentle way to get to the Castell de Castells.

Puerto de Confrides is a very popular route among cyclists on the Costa Blanca, known for its stunning scenery and challenging slopes. This climb is a category 2 climb, with a length of 9 km and an average gradient of 5%. The initial altitude is 550 m and the final 960 m, with a total gradient of 410 m. The last 1.5 km are the most challenging, with an average gradient of over 7%.

If you ride your bike on this road you are not allowed to enter the safary park (it's only available on cars) but you still can see some wonderful animals like giraffes from the distance!

Sharing the love for this place! Great location, great drinks, food & service with a smile. They also roast their own coffee, sell bikes and deliver rentals as far away as Benidorm! Loads of knowledge re locale, lovely vibe 👌

An amazing descent along the river that seems endless. The roads are in great condition and the traffic is usually pretty light.

People often turn around at the top of the Col de Rates for the descent back towards Parcent. A shame because the hinterland contains some of the most beautiful roads in the region including this descent towards Taberna. A beautiful winding road with a good layer of asphalt and a magnificent view.
