The Proserpina Dam or Reservoir is one of the oldest and best-preserved Roman hydraulic works in the world. It is located about 5 km north of Mérida, in Extremadura, and forms part of the Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993. The name “Proserpina” was adopted in the 18th century, after the discovery of an inscription dedicated to the goddess Ataecina-Proserpina.

The Roman Baths of San Lázaro are located in Mérida and are an impressive example of Roman engineering. These baths were built at the beginning of the 2nd century on the remains of an industrial facility. They had a large changing room, a steam room, two hot water pools and one cold water pool. The heat was generated through an underground fire chamber and a heating system in the walls. The baths also included a sports arena and a large outdoor swimming pool. Today, these archaeological remains can be visited and explored and offer a fascinating insight into life in ancient Rome.

Extremely impressive aqueduct in Mérida

Impressive, although this aqueduct cannot compete with the other aqueduct in Mérida.

An incredibly beautiful place, full of history. Such a beautiful theater is very rare in Europe.
