It is a very affordable climb dotted with some 8% ramps. From the moment you leave the town of Cornudella, it is a panoramic climb where you can observe the beauty of this area, both the mountains and the valleys dotted with vines. After passing the first section, which is the hardest, the climb is a succession of slides, where you can enjoy the landscape. Below I leave you the link published by cyclingcols on their website -- http://www.cyclingcols.com/col/MoreraDeMontsant

The hermitage was built by the Carthusian monks at the end of the 15th century. It has this name because it is surrounded by large rocks, which in Catalan are called “còdols”. Today, it is inhabited by a hermit who is in charge of its maintenance.

The Carthusian monastery dates back to the 12th century, when the monks of Provence chose to build, in this unique setting, at the foot of the Sierra del Montsant, the first Carthusian monastery on the Iberian Peninsula. During the 19th century, the monks fled the territory, leaving the land and buildings abandoned. Due to the constant looting, the space occupied by the charterhouse was deteriorated and, today, the remains of the cloisters, the church, as well as the refectory can be visited.

The Cadolles Fondes are located at the end of the Fraguerau gorge, at the confluence of the Gleva stream (in the form of a waterfall) with the Montsant river. The name is due to the large number of ponds of considerable depth carved into the rock by the action of the water.

We are at the end of the Fraguerau gorge, at the confluence of the Gleva torrent (in the form of a waterfall) with the Montsant river. The name Cadolles Fondes is due to the large number of ponds of considerable depth carved into the rock by the action of water. The river is considered a wildlife reserve. The fish population is of great importance, represented by madrilles, common barbs, common catfish, red-tailed barbs and river trout. River crabs, green frogs and water snakes abound. As for the birds related to the river, we highlight the water blackbird and the kingfisher. Among mammals, the water rat and the ferret.

This hermitage was founded by Fra Guerau Miquel, who on July 28, 1192 obtained possession of this area, where he lived since around 1160. The hermit founded two chapels, one dedicated to St. Mary and another , St. Bartholomew; but only the second lasts. In 1210, Fra Guerau ceded this territory to Pere Balb and his wife Guillema, who founded a female community in Santa Maria which, in 1215, settled in Bonrepòs. The hermitage of Sant Bartomeu first belonged to the monastery of Santa Maria de Bonrepòs, confirmed by Jaume II in 1292, and later passed into the domain of the Carthusian Monastery of Escaladei. It was plastered inside in the 18th century until it fell into disrepair. The hermit's house was attached. Around 1970, the whole was refurbished, removing the hermit's house and restoring the hermitage, works carried out by the parish of Ulldemolins.

It seems that the primitive construction is from the 13th century. This, however, the first information corresponds to the 16th century, when the bell was blessed in 1509 and the extension of the temple in 1571. In 1661 the hermit's house was blessed. In the meantime, the church had been equipped with altarpieces. At the end of the 18th century, coinciding with the construction of new temples in the Priory, the hermitage was considerably enlarged, probably demolishing part of the previous construction. In 1820 it was repaired again, after the French had damaged it in the War of the French. In 1877 they proceeded to venerate the chamber, and in 1864 the staircase of the presbytery was built and the altars had been arranged. In 1936 the image of Sant Joan was protected in the Reus Museum and returned to the temple after the war. At the beginning of the 1980s, an annex house, called "the musicians", was demolished and the facade of the hermitage, as well as the other annex house, were damaged. It is a hermitage of great devotion, having obtained the Jubilee from some pontiffs. In 1977, Montserrat Domingo settled in the hermitage of Sant Joan del Codolar, and has lived there as a hermit ever since. Crossing point of the GR 174 (Priorat trail) that follows the Llisera path to Albarca and the start of the Tres Esglaons and Montserrat grades.

Great landscape with viticulture on stony soils. Be sure to try the fruity grape Garnatxa down in the town Escaladei. Viticultural area is Priorat, the first wine region in Spain. More at Wikipedia: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priorat_(Weinbaugebiet)

11월 5, 2017, Cornudella to La Morera de Montsant Ascent
The eastbound access to La Morera de Montsant is less steep and three kilometers longer than the western approach. The village is located on the edge of the Natural Park and Serra de Montsant Mountains, which gives this area a lot to offer. Some even think that this street trumps some Mallorca classics. 😏

Walk around Escaladei and learn about the monastery, founded in the 12th century by French Carthusian monks from Provence and the first of its kind in the Iberian Peninsula. The monks chose a unique place for its construction, located at the foot of the Montsant massif, where a shepherd had dreamed of angels climbing to heaven on a ladder leaning against a large pine tree; hence the name Escaladei – “God's Ladder”. The ladder to heaven, or ladder to God, can be found again today in the priory logo. The charterhouse existed until 1835 and lived through periods of great splendor. For seven centuries the monks tilled the fields, built mills and taught agricultural techniques and viticulture. The prior, hence the name of the region, was the judge and administrator of the villages in the center of what is now the county, roughly corresponding to what is now the Priorat growing area. With the secularization of the church property (expropriation) by Mendizábal (1835), the monks were forced to flee suddenly, leaving their cells, the cloisters, the church and the guest house abandoned. In just two years, the once-magnificent Charterhouse was reduced to rubble as peasants weary of servitude, tithes, and submission plundered it. The monastery ruins are open to the public: visitors are led to the three cloisters, the church and the dining room, as well as to a cell that has been reconstructed with great care. A visit to the Carthusian monastery of Escaladei is a must for anyone who wants to discover the origins of the Priorat region.
