A wonderful little corner of the world, Gut Daudieck was a monastery estate in the Middle Ages, under the patronage of the Harsefeld Monastery. It served as a fish supplier for the monks. The larger ponds from that time are still cultivated today. Those visiting Gut Daudieck by bicycle should dismount and push their bikes, as the cobblestones from that era are still in place. Despite its small size, Gut Daudieck is well worth a visit.

A great cycling and hiking trail leads along here in the middle of Gut Daudick, highly recommended.

This is what defines the Altes Land: Fruit growing and shipping. The proximity to the Elbe River and the metropolis of Hamburg has shaped the Altes Land for centuries. Whether in spring during cherry blossom season or in summer and autumn during harvest time, visitors can discover a wealth of attractions here. Above all, the enchanting landscape, as well as cultural events and its sights, from the lighthouse to the Arp Schnitger organ. The Altes Land is a wonderful and unique region. It stretches from the outskirts of Hamburg for over 30 km south of the Elbe to the Hanseatic city of Stade. The area encompasses the entire municipality of Jork, the collective municipality of Lühe, and the Neu Wulmstorf district of Rübke in Lower Saxony, as well as the Hamburg districts of Neuenfelde, C.ranz, and Francop. The Elbe's tributaries—the Schwinge, the Lühe, and the Este—divide the Altes Land into three sections: the first, second, and third mile from west to east.

The crane's interior although the crane looks quite old, it is relatively young. It was only built in 1977, modeled after one in Lüneburg. Citizens of Stade, local businesses, and the Stade Rotary Club donated the money to make it possible to recreate Stade's beloved landmark. An exhibition inside the crane provides information about the history of the Hanseatic League, the port's history, the shipyards, and, of course, the wooden crane itself.

It was destroyed by fire. A fire destroyed the cranes. The great city fire of 1659 was the cause and a great calamity. Two years later, the new crane was already built. The two enormous treadwheels were now located inside the 15-meter-high and 6.5-meter-wide treadwheel crane. At the end of the 19th century, the cranes had to make way for a road widening. At that time, fewer and fewer merchant ships were docking in Stade, which is why the crane was no longer needed. And the residents were tired of the noise from the treadwheels.

The historic wooden crane in Stade was powered by muscle power. The old wooden crane in the fish market is Stade's most visited historic building. Many centuries ago, there were several cranes at the Hanseatic port to bring the ships' cargo ashore. This was called unloading. On a treadwheel crane, the pedal was mounted externally. Men walked inside it and powered the crane solely through their muscle power. It was quite hard, strenuous work. Ten to twelve men belonged to the crew; the crane operator, the crane swinger, and helpers toiled together.
