Itálica was the first Roman city to be founded on the Iberian Peninsula in 206 BC. Large parts of the pre-Hadrian city are hidden under the center of today's Santiponce. The quarter built under Hadrian, however, is largely accessible and can be visited. The settlement, later known under the full name Colonia Aelia Augusta Italica, was an early starting point for the Romanization of the Iberian Peninsula.
