The sanctuary of the Virgin of Cabeza de Monteagud, in Benizalón, stands at the top of Monteagud Hill and is one of the most iconic sites in the area. The hermitage, built on the site of an old Muslim ribat, houses the venerated image of the Virgin, a center of devotion for residents and pilgrims from throughout the region. Every year it hosts a mass pilgrimage that fills the area with a festive and religious atmosphere. For hikers, the climb offers excellent panoramic views, so it's a good idea to wear comfortable shoes and water.

Tahal Castle, nestled in the Sierra de los Filabres, was built in the 15th and 16th centuries to control the routes between the Almanzora Valley and Tabernas. Although it remains in a state of consolidated ruin today, its large rectangular keep, with its elevated entrance and masonry walls, is still impressive. Next to it, you can see the remains of a circular tower, the walled enclosure, and a cistern that provided water in the event of a siege. Freely accessible, it is an interesting place to combine history and hiking in this part of Almería.

In Macael Viejo there are vestiges of the different cultures that have inhabited the surroundings of the Macael quarries throughout history.

The route through Tahal is very scenic. I didn't stop here, I don't walk around with racing bike shoes and cleats to look at something.

The completion of the paved road that leads from Benizalón to the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza, also known as the Hermitage of Monteagud, has been one of the most pleasant novelties of "climbing cycle tourism" in the province of Almería. The ascent, clearly divided into two sections, consists of the port of Toril (whose resurfacing must also be celebrated), which begins from the vicinity of Uleila del Campo and is crowned just fifteen hundred meters from Benizalón, and a second half that After a downhill journey through that town, it begins its departure, being more irregular and which, as we said, was concluded at the beginning of 2015. At the summit of Monteagud there is an esplanade that closes the hermitage-sanctuary to the east, while looking north, south and west is the space enabled for the brotherhoods corresponding to the towns of the region, the so-called "rooms of the peoples ”. The square, with white ground, has an eight-pointed star drawn in the central part and the main building, that of the hermitage, has two separate parts, a bell tower and the virgin's dressing room, both works made in stone on which appear to be ruins of an ancient fortification. Although the origin of the sanctuary dates back to the Middle Ages and the hill had already been occupied in prehistoric times, the truth is that the whole complex has a fairly modern appearance.

The castle of Líjar is a construction of the XXI century. As in all defensive constructions, the material used is stone. It is a castle-shaped building, located in the highest area of the town. Although it is true that neither in the Book of Appeals and Distribution, nor in the cadastre of the Marqués de la Ensenada there appear reliable data of the existence of a Castle in Líjar, clear evidence such as Castillo Street and Torrecica Street are more than sufficient for its guess. In addition, its exceptional location, on the edge of a precipice, whose height can exceed 100 meters, with a totally perpendicular cut and dominating the entire wide valley, its elevated position at the top of a hill, is in itself a key defensive element. Starting from its possible existence, the idea that originated the construction of this castle was none other than to energize the activity in the municipality, diversifying the economic sectors of Líjar, through reconstruction, the enhancement of the environment and the creation a tourist office and exhibition hall inside it, in addition to having a viewpoint from which you can see the entire town, its plain and much of the mountains.
